It’s Scholarship Season
If you’d like to apply for a scholarship, now is the time! The application deadlines for many of the more than 350 scholarships offered through the DCCCD Foundation fall in May or June.
It takes a little time to fill out the applications, but it can really pay off. Remember, unlike loans, scholarship money is a gift you don’t have to pay back!
Also, keep in mind that there are scholarships available even for students who don’t have perfect grades. Sure, some scholarships require a high GPA, and others are designed for students who need financial aid. But many others don’t have these requirements.
For example, to apply for the Baylor Senior Life Enrichment Scholarship Program, you only need a 2.5 GPA. This scholarship has other specific requirements, but a perfect GPA isn’t one of them!

Consider a Career in Logistics Technology
Chances are, you know what logistics technology is ... but you may not know it by its name. Logistics technology involves managing the flow of materials, transforming them into finished goods and delivering those goods to the buyer — critical processes in today’s economy.
The DFW metroplex is one of the largest points of distribution and logistics in the United States. DCCCD’s specialized courses in warehouse, traffic, transportation management, storage and distribution, and inventory control give you a competitive edge in this booming job market.

Save Time and Money With the Core Curriculum
If you know you eventually want to transfer to a four-year college or university and get a bachelor’s degree, you can save time and money by completing the Core Curriculum at a Dallas County Community College.
What is the Core Curriculum?
The Core is a set of basic courses (totaling 48 credit hours) designed to provide a foundation for your college career. Core courses focus on six “building blocks” that you need to master to succeed in any field: reading, writing, listening, speaking, critical thinking and computer literacy.
How can the Core save me time and money?
- Our classes cover the same material and use the same textbooks – for a lot less. If you are a Dallas County resident, DCCCD tuition for a three-hour course is just $117. Compare that with $767 at UNT, $840 at UTA and $1,200 at UTD! Why not take your basics at DCCCD, where you’ll cover the same material and use the same textbooks universities use – and enjoy the convenience of our seven locations, flexible schedules, small class sizes and teachers who care – all for a lot less?
- The core transfers as a block of credit. Texas law guarantees that if you successfully complete the Core Curriculum at community college, any Texas public college or university will accept it as a block of credit. That means you won’t have to take English 101 again!

Student Success Story: Lisa Sjogren
Lisa Sjogren was working at Abbot Laboratories and trying to finish an associate degree in business, “but honestly, I felt like I was just going through the motions,” she recalls. Then she found out she could earn a degree in Logistics Technology, and things changed.
“I decided to change my degree program from business to Logistics Technology and start classes as soon as possible,” Lisa says. “Finally, my educational path started to make sense. The logistics classes covered subjects I dealt with in my daily activities, and this degree opened my eyes to new technology and techniques I could use at work.
“After spending several years working in a couple of different jobs in Abbot’s warehouse and start-up factory, I got a position in the warehouse as the supervisor. One of the things that gave me an advantage when applying for the supervisory position was my degree from North Lake College.”
