Did You Know … ?
… that DCCCD now has a virtual home in Second Life?
What’s Second Life, you ask? It’s an online “world” where you can interact with people from across the globe by using a 3-D character you create (called an avatar) that represents you.
Many colleges and universities have established a presence in Second Life so that they can offer their students simulated environments in which to learn and work — and now DCCCD is on its way to offering the same opportunities to its students.
DCCCD’s plans for using Second Life are still being developed, but the possibilities are endless. Imagine studying marine life in a virtual “ocean,” or learning about World War II by playing a soldier in a 3-D simulation!

DCCCD Student Named to All-USA Community College Academic First Team
Congratulations to Richland College student and Richland Peace & Justice Club founder Dharmesh Patel, who has been named to the All-USA Community College Academic First Team. Students are selected for the honor from more than 1,500 nominees by the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa.
Dharmesh, who moved to the U.S. from Zimbabwe just a few years ago, will graduate from Richland this spring. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA while working full time, volunteering in environmental awareness campaigns at Richland and serving as a Big Brother in his community.
Dharmesh will receive a $2,500 cash award from USA Today, and since his application was judged Best in Texas, he will receive an additional $2,000 scholarship from Coca-Cola as a New Century Scholar.
He received a trophy Monday, April 7, at the American Association of Community Colleges convention held in Philadelphia and was featured in a USA Today article published that day.
At the convention, Dharmesh also received a $5,000 Guistwhite Scholarship in recognition of his academic achievements, participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs and service to Richland and the community.
Way to go, Dharmesh!
