It’s Scholarship Season

It's time to start applying for scholarships. If you’d like to apply for a scholarship, now is the time! The application deadlines for many of the more than 350 scholarships offered through the DCCCD Foundation fall in April, May or June.

It takes a little time to fill out the applications, but it can really pay off. Remember, unlike loans, scholarship money is a gift you don’t have to pay back!

Ella Shaw, manager, Foundation scholarships, offers these tips for answering scholarship application essay questions:

  • Make sure your essay answers the question that is asked. Often, Shaw says, applicants write about something else and never provide the information scholarship committees are seeking.
  • Double check your grammar and spelling. Ask a friend to read your essay — sometimes having a second set of eyes look at your work can help.
  • Take advantage of the free tutoring services that are offered at all DCCCD colleges. A tutor won’t write your scholarship essay for you, but he or she can definitely help you polish it.
Visit our scholarships Web page for more information about available scholarships.

Make the World a Greener Place

Do something for the Earth!Environmental problems — such as global warming — may sometimes seem insurmountable, but when groups of people put their energy together toward a common purpose, progress can be made. If you want to make a difference, find out from your college’s Student Programs and Resources Office if there is already a “green” group at your college. And hey, if there isn’t, why not get some friends together and start one?

Need a little inspiration? One example of the impact people can have working together is GREENRichland, an organization of Richland College staff, faculty and students.
