It’s Scholarship Season

Don't miss the deadline for scholarships! If you’d like to apply for a scholarship, now is the time! The application deadlines for many of the more than 350 scholarships offered through the DCCCD Foundation fall in May or June.

It takes a little time to fill out the applications, but it can really pay off. Remember, unlike loans, scholarship money is a gift you don’t have to pay back!

Also, keep in mind that there are scholarships available even for students who don’t have perfect grades. Sure, some scholarships require a high GPA, and others are designed for students who need financial aid. But many others don’t have these requirements.

For example, to apply for the Baylor Senior Life Enrichment Scholarship Program, you only need a 2.5 GPA. This scholarship has other specific requirements, but a perfect GPA isn’t one of them!

Scholarship Spotlight: Baylor Senior Life Enrichment Scholarship Program

Are you a graduate of James Madison High School or School of Health Professions Townview Magnet Center? Are you interested in a career in the health care field? If so, you could potentially earn a scholarship of up to $1,000 to attend El Centro College through the Baylor Senior Life Enrichment Scholarship Program.

Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA or better and must demonstrate the need for financial aid. Applicants also must complete 50 hours of community service at Baylor Senior Health Center before they graduate.

Tips for Scholarship Essay Questions

Ella Shaw, manager, Foundation scholarships, offers these tips for answering scholarship application essay questions:

  • Make sure your essay answers the question that is asked. Often, Shaw says, applicants write about something else and never provide the information scholarship committees are seeking.
  • Double check your grammar and spelling. Ask a friend to read your essay – sometimes having a second set of eyes look at your work can help.
