It’s Scholarship Season
If you’d like to apply for a scholarship, now is the time! The application deadlines for many of the more than 350 scholarships offered through the DCCCD Foundation fall in April, May or June.
It takes a little time to fill out the applications, but it can really pay off. Remember, unlike loans, scholarship money is a gift you don’t have to pay back!
Ella Shaw, manager, Foundation scholarships, offers these tips for answering scholarship application essay questions:
- Make sure your essay answers the question that is asked. Often, Shaw says, applicants write about something else and never provide the information scholarship committees are seeking.
- Double check your grammar and spelling. Ask a friend to read your essay — sometimes having a second set of eyes look at your work can help.
- Take advantage of the free tutoring services that are offered at all DCCCD colleges. A tutor won’t write your scholarship essay for you, but he or she can definitely help you polish it.
