Appropriations
This morning at about 2 a.m., after 17 hours of debate and 243 amendments, the House approved the $150 billion appropriations bill. The bill provides $109.7 million for community colleges, which would increase DCCCD’s allocation by approximately $2.6 million over current funding.
The Senate Finance Committee should debate its version of the appropriations bill today. The current proposal would provide $119.6 million for community colleges, which translates into $3.8 million in additional dollars for DCCCD.
Earlier this week, Comptroller Susan Combs estimated that revenue from the state's new business tax will be as much as 15 percent short of earlier projections each year. She predicted that the annual shortfall could be between $500 million to $900 million, which means that adding “new money” to the state’s budget at the end of the session will be even more difficult.
