Security Watch
Systems administrators and IT managers are always trying to predict the nature of the next attempts to infiltrate their networks. One safe bet is that the attacks will now involve Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which is the standard management protocol used on TCP/IP networks. It allows the components of a network, including switches, routers, firewalls, hubs, operating systems and utilities, to communicate with management software about their overall status and operations. However, SNMP can also be used to control these devices and products, so hackers who are adept at using it can influence an entire network.
Thankfully, protecting networks from these types of attacks entails a relatively simple list of precautions.

Tech Tip of the Month
Deploying Secure Wireless LANs
During the last several months, wireless LAN (WLAN) hardware and software have become some of the most popular IT investments. The convenience of connecting users without installing cables through walls and under desks is undeniable, and it is quickly reaching the point where companies are forgoing additional deployments of wired equipment unless they are absolutely necessary.
In fact, Gartner forecasts that there will be more than 10 million new WLAN PC users during 2002. Technology experts also point out that wireless networks are riddled with vulnerabilities, so adequate security will be one of the most critical considerations.

Compuquip Technologies in the News
The technology writers of South Florida’s major daily newspapers and business weeklies are turning to Compuquip Technologies for insight about network security and administration issues for their readers. In a profile of the company entitled “Venerable Compuquip Striving for Higher Level” in the March 8-15 issue of The Business Journal, technology reporter Ed Duggan wrote “the firm, starting during ‘prehistoric’ times for computers, has matured as system acquisition, installation and integrator specialists, as well as business software suppliers.”

Security Seminar Delves into the World of the Hacker
Internet Security Systems and Compuquip Technologies recently hosted a seminar on computer and Internet security. The more than 50 South Florida IT professionals who attended got a first-hand look at how hackers infiltrate networks as well as an overview of what’s available to keep them out.
The seminar covered managed intrusion detection, firewalls and other ways companies can protect networks. Presentations about the vulnerabilities of wireless networks and instant messaging proved to be eye openers, but the highlight of the seminar was the detailed presentation of the actual means that hackers use to gain entry, deface a Web site and manipulate billing and accounts payable applications. Thankfully, it also demonstrated how adequate protections effectively prevent the vast majority of attacks.
Click on the link below to request the seminar supplement from ISS that includes information on hacking, viruses and available resources. [ISS SUPPLEMENT]
