Security Watch
Preventing SNMP Attacks Most hardware and software manufacturers now have patches available, but it’s best to first turn off SNMP throughout the network before downloading and installing the appropriate patches for every router, switch, hub and server as well as the software that runs on them.
Once the patches are installed, firewalls that have already been patched should be set to block SNMP traffic from outside the network. To keep it out, the SANS Institute recommends turning off outside access to TCP and UDP traffic (ports 161 and 162, and port 1993 on Cisco products). Internet routers and other components outside of the firewall should be patched first, and every possible point of access to the Internet should have a patched firewall installed.
