Collin College celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
Every Sept. 15-Oct. 15, the nation takes time to celebrate the many contributions and accomplishments of the Hispanic community.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, Collin College has a whole slate of events that are free and open to the public.
The month culminates with a lecture by renowned writer Dagoberto Gilb noon, Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center in Plano.
Gilb is the author of such celebrated works such as Winners on the Pass Line, The Magic of Blood, The Last Known Residence of Mickey Acuņa, Woodcuts of Women and Gritos. Recently he edited Hecho en Tejas: An Anthology of Texas Mexican Literature (2006). He has won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the PEN/Hemingway Award.
Gilb currently serves as professor of creative writing at Texas State University.

Spring Creek Campus Library
Artifacts and art work from the Hispanic world will be on display.
Hispanic Films - 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26
Spring Creek Campus Conference Center
A day-long slate of films from and featuring Hispanic themes and characters. Films include: Cautiva, The Salt of the Earth, The Motorcycle Diaries, Strawberry and Chocolate and Innocent Voices.
Salsa Dance Class - Noon-1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7
Spring Creek Campus Atrium
Salsa dance lessons hosted by Becky Pardue.
Hispanic Heritage Reading - 1:30-2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7
Spring Creek Campus Atrium
Readings by students and faculty of Hispanic poetry and prose.
Also, as a part of Hispanic Heritage Month, the college will host Project Esperanza (Hope) through Sunday, Nov. 30. Collection boxes for toys, shoes and clothes will be in every campus bookstore. All items are delivered to orphans around Latin America.
