Film features how media affects relationships

In today’s society, media has a profound effect on how men and women treat each other.  Some good, some bad.  Most importantly, media communicates to the public what is and is not acceptable.  We’ve all heard the debate over violence in video games and music videos with “mature” content.  Let’s take it a step further and discuss exactly how media in general can perpetuate violence, particularly against women.

“Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” is a riveting documentary that examines representations of gender roles in hip-hop and rap music through the lens of filmmaker Byron Hurt. Hurt examines issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today’s hip-hop culture (www.bhurt.com, 2007). This has been a popular event in the past at Collin College. Countless students and professors have participated in the viewing of this documentary and continued their experience with powerful discussions about how media can perpetuate violence against women.
