Theatre center welcomes back old friends for summer production
The Collin Theatre Center has built a legacy with its annual summer William Shakespeare performances.
Again, this year, critically acclaimed teacher and director Joanne Zipay, founder of the New York-based Judith Shakespeare Company is directing an adaptation of The Comedy of Errors.
Zipay has co-directed or dramaturged other summer Shakespeare productions including All’s Well That Ends Well, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Twelfth Night.
This year, Zipay and professor Gail Cronauer are putting a Vaudevillian spin on Shakespeare’s classic comedy about two sets of twins, who find themselves intertwined in a series of mishaps and instances of mistaken identities. Taking inspiration from the silent movie era, the production will include the piano styling of former Collin College student Casey Struble, who constructed a soundtrack from the ragtime and jazz tradition.
"It is great to be back in Dallas, where I got my professional start 25 years ago,” Zipay said. “Gail Cronauer was one of my very first acting teachers, and she's been a profound influence and inspiration in my life, art and career. There are so many possibilities here in Plano. It's wonderful to be in a place with such a positive, open, receptive spirit and to be able to expand my work connecting people of all kinds with Shakespeare."
