The Nursing Program received the Continuing Approval with Commendation from the Board of Nursing. The commendation is for the 98.28 percent pass rate on the 2007 NCLEX-RN examination.

Kritanjali Dhungana, Hikma Jemal, Lida Vatanpour and Richard Wong, Collin College students, were accepted to participate in Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The REU program offers a 10-week research experience for undergraduates.

Faculty and Staff News

Dr. Chris Grooms

Dr. Pam Gaiter, professor of sociology, and Dr. Chris Grooms, professor of English, presented at the 12th Cotton and Rural History Conference at the Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum in Greenville. Professor Gaiter presented “Living the Legacy: Black Land Owners in East Texas, 1870-2000’s” and Dr. Grooms made a musical presentation “How Cotton Brought the Blues to Texas.” The event was co-sponsored by the Collin’s Department of History, Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Nichole Berry, reference librarian at the Spring Creek Campus, was named as the community college representative to the Texas State Library's TexShare Education Services Working Group. The group advices the Texas State Library on information literacy and staff development needs among TexShare member libraries.

Andrea Leavey, professor of English, received her doctorate in Humanities from The University of Texas at Dallas. Leavey became the first faculty member to graduate under a partnership that provides scholarships to Collin College faculty obtaining their doctoral degrees from UT Dallas.

Barbara Money, associate vice president of Student Development, received her doctorate in Leadership in Higher Education from Capella University.

Collin College Continuing Education's fall 2007 and spring 2008 schedules placed first in the Texas Administrators of Continuing Education for Community/Junior Colleges marketing awards in Austin April 23-25.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awarded Collin College with the gold in the Newsletter category for the fall and winter Connections community newsletters.

The National Junior College Athletic Association awarded Collin College the Men's National Tennis Tournament for another three years. The NJCAA said that Collin puts on a first class national tournament and that teams enjoy coming to Plano.

More than 200 people attended the Destination College Special Needs Workshop “Smooth Sailing: Chart Your Course for the Future – Opportunities for Students with Disabilities” hosted by the ACCESS Office and Destination College in April at the Spring Creek Campus.

McKinney ISD recognized Collin College and the Central Park Campus as one of its Partners In Education (PIE) for its current and growing commitment to and engagement in the REACH student mentoring program; support of the Texas Scholars program through presentations and college communications to participating students; ongoing efforts of Collin College faculty, staff and administrators toward growing the enrollment of under-represented populations in higher education; and general support of the McKinney Education Foundation and its shared goal of assuring more students can afford to attend college.
