Men's, women's tennis take regionals

Collin men's and women tennis teams.

Collin College hosted the 2008 NJCAA Region V Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships April 19-20.

They also won them.

On Saturday morning, both teams dominated the Temple College Leopards in the first round, as the Cougar women won 9-0 and the men won 8-0.

In the afternoon, the Temple women’s team took on the North Central Texas College Lions, while the Leopard men tackled the New Mexico Military Institute. NCTC defeated Temple 9-0 to set up a Saturday championship match between the Cougars and the Leopards, while the NMMI Broncos beat the Temple men’s team in dramatic style five matches to four to set up a men’s championship match between Collin College and NMMI for Saturday.

The next morning, the Cougar men defeated the Broncos 8-1 to raise their yearly record to a record 20-3. This is Collin College’s their 19th straight NJCAA Region V Men’s Tennis Championship.

On the women’s side, things were not quite so easy. It all came down to one last match at line five between Collin College’s Gina Solis and NCTC’s Kylie George. Solis, suffering from severe laryngitis, lost the first set 6-3, but rallied to win the second 6-4. With both teams lined up on the adjacent court and a throng of fans in the stands, Solis took the third set 6-3 along with the match and the 2008 NJCAA Region V Women’s Tennis Championship for the second year in a row and the 16th time in 19 years.

The women move on next week to Tucson, Arizona to compete in the 2008 NJCAA Women’s National Tennis Championships. And in two weeks Collin College will host the 2008 NJCAA Men’s National Tennis Championships.
