College hosts third speaker in series

Dr. Joan Fujimura

The 2007-08 Collin College Distinguished Speaker Series -- “Knowledge” –continues at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 4 with Dr. Joan Fujimura.

Dr. Fujimura is a professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she was founding director of the Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Center for Science and Technology Studies. Her primary work is in the anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, feminist studies, and history of science, medicine and technology.

She will present "Epistemology in Action:  Knowledge Production in Context.”  Dr. Fujimura will discuss the practical production of knowledge. What are the real world contingencies that scientists face as they attempt to produce knowledge, to weave some sense from the tangle of information and the perceived disorder on the frontline of research? How is knowledge constructed and re-constructed?

Dr. Fujimura will also speak from 10-10:50 a.m., Wednesday, March 5. Seating is limited for this lecture.

Both events are free and open to the public, and will be at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.

The final installment of the 2007-08 series is Dr. Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine and executive director of the Skeptics Society, Tuesday, April 15. The Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored by the Collin College Center for Scholarly and Civic Engagement.
