Wanted: Men of Strength to help stop violence against women
By Sandy Suvannachakkham
Special Contributor

According to
www.menstoppingviolence.org, one in three women are physically or sexually assaulted by a man sometime in her lifetime. Every day in the United States, an average of three women are murdered by a partner or ex-partner. More than 500,000 women are being stalked right now by a man.

Are all men abusive? Of course not. In fact, most men do not assault, stalk or kill. And some men respond to violence against women by taking a proactive role to combat the issue.

My Strength is an organization created  to help men learn about other young men who are living a life based on equality, caring and respect.

Here are some proactive roles a Man of Strength can take to stop violence against women:

• If you hear someone make a sexist comment, speak out about it.

• Ask a female friend or female family member what it is like being a girl. Does she ever feel scared, and what can you do to help?

• Tell a male friend what you’ve learned about what men can do to stop sexual and dating violence.

• Learn the statistics about rape, and consider how many people it really affects.

To learn more about My Strength’s endeavors or other ways you can help, please visit it’s official homepage at
www.MyStrength.org.

Men Against Violence from the University of North Texas in Denton developed a program in conjunction with Man of Strength. Their goal is to end violence of all kinds by focusing on the role men play in violence. Men Against Violence presentation topics include dating violence, sexual assault, redefining masculinity and more.

This summer, Collin College’s Zero Tolerance Of Violence and Student Life have come together to coordinate two Men Against Violence presentations. Click here for more information. Door prizes and food will be provided. Come learn with us about how men can be proactive in ending violence.
