Collin College students can pursue a new healthcare degree this fall – the associate of applied science in surgical technology. The college is accepting fall semester applications for the program until June 1. Admission to the Collin College program is selective and competitive. Mirtha Aertker, the Best of Show artist at Collin College’s “Viewpoints 2006,” will host “MíoSolo” Monday, June 4-Friday, June 29, at THE ARTS gallery, located at the Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. Aertker’s unique style combines raku, welded metal and found objects, coupled with digital collage compositions. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Fire-Rescue Camp 2007 is set from Monday-Friday, June 4-8 at the Central Park Campus in McKinney. Boys and girls ages 14-18 interested in the occupation of fire-rescue personnel are invited. They will participate in hands-on training and learning the skills of professional firefighters. Camp participants should be in good physical condition, willing to learn and enjoy working in a team. Enrollment is limited to 18 participants. Camp times are 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-noon Friday. Cost is $150. For more information, call Leslie Thetford at 972.548.6836.

The theatre department will present William Shakespeare’s “All’s Well That Ends Well” at 8 p.m., Thursday-Saturday, June 21-23 and 28-30, and 2:15 p.m., Sunday, June 24 and July 1. The June 28 performance will be sign-interpreted for the deaf or hard of hearing. Tickets are $5 and all performances will be at the Black Box Theatre at the Spring Creek Campus. The 13th annual Texas All-Star Jazz Camp is set from Sunday-Friday, July 15-20 at the Spring Creek Campus. Cost is $265. Students age 13 or older with at least one year experience at their instrument are invited to attend. Adult participants and educators are also welcome. Faculty will include Tim Ishii, Glenn Kosfur, Jay Saunders, Keith Jourdan, Dan Evans, Keith Adkins, Michael Burgess, Dave Butler, A.G. Robeson, Mike Drake and a host of other jazz professionals. The 2006-07 Auteur Film Series, “Fools, Cons and Liars: Trickster Characters in Film,” will feature “Kung Fu Hustle” at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 21 at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. Current and future Collin College students have until Wednesday, Aug. 1, to apply for the Southern Methodist University (SMU) pre-admissions program. The program allows students to attend Collin College and earn core credit. All the while, they can work with SMU advisors to ensure a seamless transfer of those credits to the university. Also, students can take advantage of lecture and sporting event tickets, a DART pass, access to SMU’s library and more. Interested students must have a grade point average of at least 2.95 with fewer than 30 transferable hours or a grade point average of 2.70 with more than 30 transferable hours. Students also must complete an application, two essay questions and possibly a recommendation from a faculty member. For more information or for an application, visit

The deadline to apply for Student Leadership Academy is 5 p.m., Friday, July 20. SLA is a rigorous semester-long leadership experience unique to Collin College. The course is designed to encourage leadership, integrity, professional development, scholarship and service. The curriculum fosters skills through lecture, guest speakers, student facilitation and team projects. The students earn three credit hours upon completion. Only 25 students will be accepted into the fall LEAD 1301 course. Students interested in the course must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and fill out an application packet. The application must be completed in its entirety to be considered for the class. There is no prerequisite for LEAD 1301. LEAD 1301 classes are scheduled every Friday from 8:45 a.m.-noon in the fall semester. LEAD 2301 classes are offered at the same time during the spring semester. Both courses will be at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd. in Frisco. As part of the application packet, students participating in the Student Leadership Academy must submit an academic transcript, two letters of recommendation and an essay.
