Surgical Tech deadline today
Collin College students can pursue a new healthcare degree this fall – the associate of applied science in surgical technology.

The college is accepting fall semester applications for the program until June 1. The degree will prepare students to work as surgical technologists. Surgical technologists assist in surgical operations, prepare operating rooms and ensure medical equipment works properly. They also prepare patients for surgery, transport patients to the surgery area, observe patient vital signs, process charges and generally assist the surgical team.

The need for surgical technologists is increasing as the volume of surgeries continues to grow.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that the surgical technology field will grow by 27 percent in the coming years, the highest comparative level of any other occupation. Additionally, the need for surgical technologists is expected to grow by 31.74 percent in Dallas and by 33.95 percent in north central Texas. In 2004, the median salary for surgical technologists ranged from $33,130 in hospitals to $37,510 in dental offices. In areas of high demand and a shortage of qualified professionals, salaries climb to the mid-$40,000 range.

Admission to the Collin College program is selective and competitive. For more information and admissions requirements, contact academic advisor Lynne Meyer at 972.548.6778 or visit the program website at
