Faculty and Staff News
Former Collin College student Elicia Garcia was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Memphis in 2004 where she will graduate with her bachelor's degree in music education this month. Garcia has received a recording contract with a Cuban band and has landed a job in New York City teaching music to disabled children. Elicia started her work with children as an active member of LULAC while at Collin College. She studied voice with professors Noelle Woods and David Alexander, music theory with professor Kathy Morgan, and piano with professors Brian Allison and Natalya Pitts.
The viewpoints 2007 exhibition winners were announced at THE ARTS gallery. The winners were: Carolyn Helvey, Best of Show, “Dreams of My Mothers, Sisters and Grandmothers;” Suzanne Hess, Director’s Choice, “Jay Bird and OleCrow will Get It If You Don’t Watch Out;” Burv Bossie, first place, 2-D, “Worried Woman After Photograph by William Mortensen ca. 1930;” Karen Sedita, first place, 3-D, “Where?”; Charlotte Ware, second place, 2-D, “The Pig with the Gold Ring (Proverbs);” Beverly Fetterman, second place, 3-D, “Balance;” Tom Naylor, third place, 2-D, “Going Within;” and Mirtha Aertker, third place, 3-D, “Living Me.”

The LULAC District III Convention was held April 21. LULAC students won the District III Young Adult Council of the Year Award and professor of photography Lupita Murillo Tinnen won the Young Adult Advisor of the Year Award.

In March, ceramics professor Lee Akins participated in the "Line to Volume" exhibit at Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Ind., as part of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.

| Carolyn Jones | Carolyn Jones, financial aid coordinator, has been asked to serve as vice president of the Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (TASFAA).
Theatre professor Gail Cronauer has been cast to play Maria Callas in the production of “MASTER CLASS” with the Lyric Stage Musical Theatre Company.
The theater review that appeared in the Sunday, April 22, edition of The Dallas Morning News featured Collin College theatre Professor Shannon Kearns-Simmons' performance in the play “The Appeal” showing at the Undermain Theatre in Dallas. The review stated, "All four performers were terrific, but the show belongs to Ms. Kearns-Simmons. She's a mass of hostility barely under control."

| Susan Kamath | Susan Kamath, professor of nursing, was given the 2007 Heart Award Recipient by the Volunteer McKinney Center. The award was given to "an individual volunteer or a group of volunteers who have provided significant volunteer service at one agency or organization, etc. and impacted that agency/organization in a positive and significant way." She was honored for her service to the Childrens' & Community Clinic of McKinney.
Amy Lenhart, counselor, was named president-elect of the Texas College Counseling Association and Pam Love-White, counselor, was named to the Texas Counseling Association’s Senate representing the Texas College Counseling Association.
The spring 2007 Wellness Team Challenge winners were: The Nutty Professors -- grand prize -- 1,402 points Runners up by campus: Allen Go-Getters -- Allen Fit and Free Birds No. 1 -- Central Park Campus Courtyard Cougars -- Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development Retro Dog Walkers -- Preston Ridge Campus Health Nuts -- Spring Creek Campus Fun Time Doing This -- Spirit Award Wellness Team Challenge participants logged 9,607 hours of exercise this semester, an increase of 407 hours.
