College EXPOsed to Career Week 2007
By Larry Maughan Special Contributor
“Excellent presentation and very helpful!” wrote a student attending last week’s session presented by Kathryn Kelly of ExcellerateHRO during Career Week.
The “Professional Image”session by Sherree Koehler brought comments such as “She was a blast, very informative, very sharp and precise.”
This annual event sponsored by the Career Services and Cooperative Work Experience along with Student Life gave meaning to the theme of “Careers Unlimited.” The events of Career Week 2007 are past, but the impact and results continue on for many who participated and may be a beginning for career planning.
Students were able to gather information on improving their first impression skills with an employer, conducting themselves in a professional manner during a meal, exploring careers previously dominated by certain genders and even hearing of future careers being developed in “real time.”
The Career EXPO on Tuesday evening over 40 employers were represented to discuss career and job opportunities with students. In addition, faculty and chairpersons from such areas as Business and Computer Science and Fire Science were on hand to discuss Collin academic and career offerings. Thursday was Technology Day and included panelist from commercial music, graphic and gaming animation, and convergence technology.
“We were pleased to provide this week of exploration about careers and to have such outstanding presenters. Now we hope to see students in our career centers utilizing our services for the next steps in developing a career and academic plan," said Lydia Gober, director of Career Services and Cooperative Work Experience.
As the spring semester draws to a conclusion and the interest in summer employment gains momentum, students are encouraged to contact the Career Services and Co-op offices on the major campuses for assistance.
Now is the time to adjust your resume and apply for jobs relating to your major studies. You can contact these offices at the Spring Creek Campus (972.881.5781), Central Park Campus (972.548.6749), and the Preston Ridge Campus (972.377.1781) for services and opportunities available to you.
Career Byte An exciting partnership developed between Professor Charles Corrales’ Exposition and Trade Show Operations class and Career Week staff to make the Career EXPO a success. According to Elaine Stewart from CSCWE who chaired this event, “The class was fantastic, so organized and very much on top of their responsibilities in making this event happen.” Also, staff and students from the Culinary Arts program did a superior job applying their classroom training by providing hors’deuvres for employer guests.
