Top 10 -- Crazy May events
Top 10 Weird May Events

May is an odd month to begin with. It is considered the spring, but it can be hot like the summer. Frankly, Cougar News would rather jump from April to June and get the summer started and over with. That’s just us.

Anyway, May is king when it comes to some crazy -- and some not-so-crazy -- festivals, camps and other events in north Texas.

10. Taste Addison 2007
The Taste of Addison is one of the better “Tastes of...” in the area and has become less of a taste test of some great eateries, but a daylong event. This year’s acts including Blues Traveler and ... wait for it ... "American Idol’s" Chris Daughtry. Yowza!

9. 34th annual Mother’s Day Home and Gardens Tour
Most mothers are very sweet, so why not treat yours to the “crown jewel of area home tours.” Mothers love looking at houses they don’t own and gardens they don’t have to tend.

8. The Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival
The weirdest aspect of this annual fest is the odd exclamation point planted after “wildflower” as if it’s supposed to be pronounced with an excited cadence, but “arts & music festival” is a little more subdued. Hold on to your hat, here’s the list of 2007’s bands: Eddie Money, John Waite, Morris Day and the Time, The Romantics, Grand Funk Railroad and Better Than Ezra.

7. Scarborough Renaissance Festival®
With all respect to Simon and Garfunkel, this event has gone from weird to pretty normal, over time. Nonetheless, the event in Waxahachie is a favorite of many seeking turkey legs, jousting and getting one’s picture taken in stocks.

6. Camp Rollerblade
Head to Fair Park and get 10 hours of professional in-line skate instruction. In-line skate instructors are expensive -- $239 for two days.

5. Greater Fort Worth Herb Society Herb Festival
Does anyone else think the Greater Fort Worth Herb Society loves repetition? Purchase various herbs, books and herb-related products and witness lectures and demonstrations. It’s only $5, what else do you have to do?

4. Cardboard Boat Regatta
For this event, amateur boat builders are challenged to build and navigate boats made of corrugated cardboard. "Attendees can observe masterful maneuvers of boats braving the waves at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor” in Arlington. I’m thinking more “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” than “Rock the Boat.”

3. 41st annual National Polka Festival
Why this is held in Ennis is a mystery unless there’s a large Czechoslovakian population there unbeknownst to everyone. Learn about Czech traditions, religious customs, food, music and dancing ... polka with live bands. Oompa.

2. 7th annual Fala Day
The Scots never want to be left out. Actually, this day goes to the dogs, specifically Scotties and their families. Our favorite Scottie: Jock, from “Lady and the Tramp.”

1. A Tribute to Red Skelton by Tom Mullica
This one’s local, ladies and gents, in McKinney. This tribute to the son of a clown and old-time vaudevillian could have been held in just about any other month. Alas, May always tends to get the more interesting attractions.
