Campus Dates
Registration for summer and Maymester classes at Collin College has begun. Online registration dates are: Maymester -- Through Tuesday, May 8 and Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13; Summer I and III -- Through Wednesday, May 23 and Friday-Tuesday, May 25-29; and Summer II -- Through Thursday, July 5 and Saturday and Sunday, July 7-8. Online registration is available from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. For online registration, visit the college website at www.ccccd.edu/ and click in the “Student Services” link. Also, the e-schedule, which is a downloadable list of class times, days, professors and important course notes, is available at the college website. Deadlines for payments are Tuesday, May 8 for Maymester, Wednesday, May 23 for Summer I and III, and Thursday, July 5 for Summer II. Quad C Theatre will conclude their 2006-2007 season with "How I Learned to Drive," by Paula Vogel. "How I Learned to Drive" is a wildly funny, surprising and devastating tale of survival as seen through the lens of a troubling relationship between a young girl and an older man. "How I Learned to Drive" is the story of a woman who learns the rules of the road and life from behind the wheel. Winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize. Directed by Robin Armstrong (Dallas). Please note: The play is a potent and convincing comment on a taboo subject. Therefore, this show is not recommended for children. "How I Learned to Drive" will be presented by Quad C Theatre at Collin College, in the Black Box Theatre. Performances are May 2-5 at 8 p.m., with matinees May 5-6 at 2:15 p.m. Tickets are $8 for General Admission, $6 for Students and Senior Citizens (55+). Group rates are available. A exhibition of art from humanities students will be on displayed from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, May 4 at the Spring Creek Campus Atrium. The exhibit will feature the creative projects of Spring 2007 Humanities 1301 students – and will include music, photography, poetry, and various forms of visual art. Humanities 1301 students explore what it means to be human by examining humankind’s creativity throughout the ages. Visual and performing arts, literature, architecture, philosophy, technology, religion, and mythology, are all part of the Humanities compendium. Refreshments will be served from 2-4 p.m.
THE ARTS gallery will host “Viewpoints 2007,” a statewide community college juried show through Saturday, May 5. The gallery is located at the Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. The 2006-07 Auteur Film Series, “Fools, Cons and Liars: Trickster Characters in Film,” continues Tuesday, May 1, with “Boudu Saved From Drowning.” The 1932 Jean Renoir film focuses on Boudu, a Parisian tramp who is saved from drowning by a gentle bookseller, Mr. Lestingois, who takes Boudu in. Mrs. Lestingois and the maid, Anne-Marie, are less than delighted about the new house guest. The screening is free and open to the public. It will be held at 7 p.m. with seating at 6:30 p.m. at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. The film runs 84 minutes and is not rated. Collin College will hold commencement ceremonies at 7 p.m., Friday, May 11, in the main gymnasium at the activity center at The University of Texas at Dallas.
Collin College students can pursue a new healthcare degree this fall – the associate of applied science in surgical technology. The college is accepting fall semester applications for the program until June 1. The degree will prepare students to work as surgical technologists. Surgical technologists assist in surgical operations, prepare operating rooms and ensure medical equipment works properly. They also prepare patients for surgery, transport patients to the surgery area, observe patient vital signs, process charges and generally assist the surgical team. Admission to the Collin College program is selective and competitive. Fire-Rescue Camp 2007 is set from Monday-Friday, June 4-8, at the Central Park Campus in McKinney. Boys and girls ages 14-18 interested in the occupation of fire-rescue personnel are invited. They will participate in hands-on training and learning the skills of professional firefighters. Camp participants should be in good physical condition, be willing to learn and enjoy working in a team. Enrollment is limited to 18 participants. The 13th annual Texas All-Star Jazz Camp is set from Sunday-Friday, July 15-20, at the Spring Creek Campus. Cost is $265. Students age 13 or older with at least one year experience at their instrument are invited to attend. Adult participants and educators are also welcome. Faculty will include Tim Ishii, Glenn Kosfur, Jay Saunders, Keith Jourdan, Dan Evans, Keith Adkins, Michael Burgess, Dave Butler, A.G. Robeson, Mike Drake and a host of other jazz professionals. The deadline to apply for Student Leadership Academy is 5 p.m., Friday, July 20. SLA is a rigorous semester-long leadership experience unique to Collin. The course is designed to encourage leadership, integrity, professional development, scholarship and service. The curriculum fosters skills through lecture, guest speakers, student facilitation and team projects. The students earn three credit hours upon completion. Only 25 students will be accepted into the fall LEAD 1301 course. Students interested in the course must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and fill out an application packet. The application must be completed in its entirety to be considered for the class. There is no prerequisite for LEAD 1301. LEAD 1301 classes are scheduled every Friday from 8:45 a.m.-noon in the fall semester. LEAD 2301 classes are offered at the same time during the spring semester. Both courses will be at the Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd. in Frisco. As part of the application packet, students participating in the Student Leadership Academy must submit an academic transcript, two letters of recommendation and an essay. Current and future Collin College students have until Wednesday, August 1 to apply for the Southern Methodist University (SMU) pre-admissions program. The program allows students to attend Collin College and earn core credit. All the while, they can work with SMU advisors to ensure a seamless transfer of those credit to the university. Also, students can take advantage of lecture and sporting event tickets, a DART pass, access to SMU’s library and more. Interested students must have a grade point average of at least 2.95 with fewer than 30 transferable hours or a grade point average of 2.70 with more than 30 transferable hours. Students also must complete an application and two essay questions and possibly a recommendation from a faculty member.
