Gang Green: Earth Day events scheduled
The college will host the 2007 Earth Day celebration April 17-18 at its Preston Ridge Campus, 9700 Wade Blvd. in Frisco. The celebration is presented in coordination with the city of Frisco. All events are free and open to the public.
Events will focus around the theme “Less is More…Sustain Our Earth.” The celebration will also recognize International Day and Environmental Education Week. Through various activities and lectures, attendees will learn how to make choices that will improve quality of life and benefit the environment. Attendees can get a henna tattoo, view hybrid vehicles, take a trip on a Segway, plant a Xeriscape dish garden, listen to Native American music and learn about green building, among many other activities. Community members are encouraged to bring old eye glasses, gently used pairs of shoes, old telephone books, old printers and computer components to recycle.
The following special events are scheduled:
“The Environment from the Nigerian Perspective” – noon, April 17 -- Event Center Ehimare Aigbivbalu, Collin adjunct environmental science professor, will present a lecture and slideshow of environmental conditions and problems in the developing countries.
Rock Concert and “Affluenza” – 4 p.m., April 17 -- Quad A rock concert will be followed by pizza and the movie “Affluenza,” which explores the high social and environmental costs of materialism and over-consumption.
Fun Run-Walk and Bike Cruise – 9 a.m., April 18 -- Quad The Fun Run-Walk and Bike Cruise will emphasize foot-power and pedal-power as alternative modes of transportation that improve quality of life.
Official Proclamation and Welcoming Ceremony – 11 a.m., April 18 -- Quad Collin Board of Trustees member Sam Roach will kick off the festivities, and the Earth Day Proclamation from the city of Frisco will be read.
Special Lectures – 11 a.m.-2 p.m., April 18 -- Event Center Christy Ilfrey, co-owner of Native Texas Garden Designs, will present “Journey of a Water Molecule: Drought, Native Landscaping, and the Trinity River Basin” at 11 a.m. Jeremy Starritt, environmental educational coordinator for the city of Frisco, will present “Peace Corps Experiences” at noon. A faculty-student panel will discuss “Changing Our Attitudes: How to Sustain Our Earth” at 1 p.m.
