The North Central Texas Workforce Board awarded Collin College the Lean Development and High Performance Work System Implementation grant totaling $223,323 to train 125 employees from Wylie-based Sanden International, Inc. The company is matching 10 percent of the award with an additional $24,000 employer contribution. Sanden International, Inc., is an automotive compressor manufacturing and distribution company that supplies tier-one auto makers around the world. It also is a retail sales provider for stores such as AutoZone, Pep Boys, NAPA and others. Sanden International, Inc., is the top distributor of heavy duty truck compressors.
At the National Campus Compact Civic Engagement Conference held in Austin recently, five professors were named as faculty fellows including psychology professor Valerie Smith. Others named were from St. Mary’s University, The University of Texas, Our Lady of the Lake University and Texas Christian University. Smith was the only faculty fellow named from a community college.

Professor of culinary arts John O’Neil was featured in the Feb. 11 issue of the Plano Insider as one of the community’s “Movers & Shakers.” O’Neil also has contributed several articles that have appeared in the Dallas Morning News and their online news service.
Linda Thompson, professor of office systems technology, presented the benefits of Collin’s Medical Transcription Specialization Certification at the Greater Dallas Chapter of the American Association for Medical Transcription. Thompson was joined in the presentation by Collin Associate Professor Connie Walls who is president-elect of the Greater Dallas Chapter.
Coordinator of International Students/Advisor Associate Rebecca Crowell has been named the NAFSA Association of International Educators Region III Development Representative for 2007.
Byrd Williams, chair and professor of photography, recently presented at the Heard Museum during a video and verbal discussion of the unique architectural elements of Collin County. He showed pictures from collections by students since 1988.
Jennifer O’Loughlin-Brooks, professor of psychology, was named the national vice president for the Southwest Region of Psi Beta National Honor Society.
The college’s public relations department received a bronze Telly Award for outstanding achievement for a 30-second commercial titled "Smart Move." The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. The 28th Annual Telly Awards received more than 12,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents. The Telly Awards is a national awards organization that helps set the standards for the video production industry. This puts Collin College’s work in the same league as E! Entertainment TV, PBS, Black Entertainment Network, Walt Disney Studios, The Weather Channel, Universal Studios and other winners.
