Campus Dates
Eleven Collin art students will know the exhilaration of exhibition starting Monday, Feb. 5. “Cool Hands Hot Art” showcases the sculpture students all from professor Luke Sides’ portfolio class. The works of bronze, steel, wood, silver, copper and clay will be on display through Saturday, Feb. 24, at the 14th Street Gallery, 1412 14th St. in Plano. A reception is slated from 6-8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 9, at the gallery. THE ARTS gallery will present "Max Kazemzadeh: Express and Local" through Saturday, Feb. 10. "Express and Local" is an interactive installation with projection and sound revolving around the decision to take the express or the local lines on subways and trains. Kazemzadeh will perform part of the exhibition at the opening reception. Kathryn Woods will take attendees back 150 years as she brings to life former slave, abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth from 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 7, in the Central Park Campus Pike Hall.

David Faigman, a professor of law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco will present “Adjudicating Faith: The Law’s Obligation to Reconcile Religion and Science Through the Prism of the First Amendment” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in the Preston Ridge Campus Event Center, 9700 Wade Blvd., in Frisco. The free lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Faigman will conduct classroom visits at the Spring Creek Campus Friday, Feb. 9, with a reception scheduled for noon. The campus is located at 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, in Plano. The Collin College Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored in cooperation with Collin's Center for Scholarly & Civic Engagement. The annual Soul Food Luncheon is set from noon-1:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 9, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. The event is an excellent opportunity to partake of savory fare and to celebrate the impact of African Americans in the community and in American culture.

The inaugural Salsa Stand-Off is set from 3-4:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, in the Spring Creek Campus atrium. Salso and chips from local restaurants, faculty, staff and students will be judged for four categories: mild, hot, inferno and miscellaneous. In addition, light hors d'oeuvres will be served with entertainment, the All College Council bake sale and door prizes. Advance tickets are $1 and $2 at the door. Tickets are available at D109 at the Central Park Campus, B101 at the Courtyard Center; A185 at the Preston Ridge Campus and F129 at the Spring Creek Campus.

THE ARTS gallery will host "if the hat fits," a portfolio print exchange, Wednesday, Feb. 14-Saturday, March 10. A reception is set for 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, at the gallery. Sociology professor Pam Gaiter will present “Living the Legacy,” the result of her sabbatical research on African American landowners from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15 at Central Park Campus Pike Hall, and 12:30-1:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16 at Spring Creek Campus, Room C104.

The Collin TI Jazz Band will host a Mardi Gras Celebration at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Eisemann Center, 2351 Performance Drive in Richardson. The Auteur Film Series, "Fools, Cons and Liars: Trickster Characters in Film," will present "Bamboozled" at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center in Plano. Seating starts at 6:30 p.m. The movie is rated R. This Spike Lee joint revolves around an Ivy League-educated African American man whose TV show idea is rejected by the network. Collin photography students’ work from a recent trip to Big Bend National Park in May will be on exhibit at the Plano Municipal Center and Plano Centre. The showcase is titled “Around the Bend.” The exhibit will be at the Plano Municipal Center, 1520 Avenue K, in Plano from through Friday, March 2. The photographs will then be moved to the Plano Centre, located at 2000 E. Spring Creek Parkway from Tuesday, March 3-Friday, March 30. A reception for the exhibit is set from 6-9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 2 at the Plano Municipal Center. Both venues are open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and the exhibit is free and open to the public. The college will host Live Smart! A Health and Safety Fair from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Friday, March 2, at the Central Park Campus in McKinney. The free event is open to the public and will include health and safety information, a blood drive, a fire safety trailer, seminars and speakers. Topics will include breast cancer awareness, cardiac health, strokes, smoking, headache, sports injuries and much more.
