Islamic law scholar set to lecture at Spring Creek Campus
Collin will host one of the foremost scholars on Islamic law during a lecture 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center.

| Dr. Yusuf Z. Kavakci | Dr. Yusuf Ziya Kavakci will present “The Concept of Law: Islam and the West,” the first of a planned series of lectures addressing fundamental questions of meaning and value from the perspective of diverse traditions represented in the community.
Dr. Kavakci earned a law degree and a doctorate in Islamic history and culture from Istanbul University in Turkey, where he later taught, and has taught and served as dean at the College of Islamic Studies of Ataturk University in Erzurum. He is a board certified attorney in Turkey and has practiced law in Libya, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
A native of Turkey, Dr. Kavakci was ordained as a Waiz (a teacher of Islamic studies) and Mufti (a scholar that can make judgments on Islamic law) and served as an Imam (a religious leader) at several mosques in Istanbul. He has published a number of books in Turkish.
He is currently the resident Islamic scholar for the Islamic Association of North Texas and the founding dean of the Suffa Islamic Seminary.
The Spring Creek Campus is located at 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano.
