Collin celebrates African American History Month

Eighty-one years ago, history was made.
Due to Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s foresight and ambition, Americans learn more and more about the contributions and history of African Americans. The Harvard scholar helped create “Negro History Week” in 1926. Since, February has been synonymous with Black History Month, but still the rich African American culture has spread out through the year.
Collin annually celebrates African American History Month with a series of events -- opportunities for students, faculty and staff to learn about and appreciate African American history.
Exhibits available throughout February:
-- Juanita Austin’s “It’s All Wood: Selected Hand-Carved Wood Pieces from Africa, Asia and Australia” in the Spring Creek Campus LRC;
-- John Wilkins will present "The Road from Slavery to Freedom: Still Traveling!" at the Preston Ridge Campus LRC; and
-- Kim Washington will present “Jubilee,” a message of freedom and redemption at the Central Park Campus LRC
Events:
Wednesday, Feb. 7 -- Central Park Campus Pike Hall -- 10-11 a.m. Kathryn Woods will take attendees back 150 years as she brings to life former slave, abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth.
Friday, Feb. 9 -- Spring Creek Campus Conference Center -- noon-1:15 p.m. The annual Soul Food Luncheon is an excellent opportunity to partake of savory fare and to celebrate the impact of African Americans in the community and in American culture.
Thursday, Feb. 15 -- Central Park Campus Pike Hall -- 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16 -- Spring Creek Campus, Room C104 -- 12:30-1:30 p.m. Sociology professor Pam Gaiter will present “Living the Legacy,” the result of her sabbatical research on African American landowners.
Monday, Feb. 19 -- Spring Creek Campus, Room C104 -- 7 p.m. The 2006-07 Auteur Film Series will present Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled” in honor of African American History Month. This film revolves around an Ivy League-educated African American man whose TV show idea is rejected by the network. Frustrated, he revives the minstrel shows with African American actors in black face.
Wednesday, Feb. 21 -- Spring Creek Campus Conference Center -- 7-9 p.m. Local Islamic scholar and spiritual leader Imam Yusuf Kavakci will present a lecture titled “The Concept of Law in Islam and the West.”
