Student, faculty and college news
Jordan Goldblatt, sophomore Collin jazz student, has been selected as a member of the 2007 International Association for Jazz Education's (IAJE) International All-Star Community College Jazz Band. Goldblatt was selected out of hundreds of applicants worldwide and is one of only 20 selected and the only one on his instrument, baritone saxophone. The band will perform with acclaimed Lincoln Center trombonist, Wycliff Gordon, at the IAJE International Convention in New York City in January.
The National Technical Honor Society inducted 31 new members into the academic organization. The National Technical Honor Society recognizes technical students who champion a stronger, more positive image for workforce education in America. The new inductees represent 19 programs at Collin. Newly elected officers are: President, Sarah Valliere, Vice President, Patricia Huffman, Secretary, Connie Jaco, and Treasurer, Ziara Osborne. Amy Reynolds will serve as the organization’s new webmaster. The newly inducted members are: Mary Abram, Michael Allen, Dana Anderson, Betty Baldwin, Valerie Campise, Debbie Campos, Lizabeth Carder, Cory Cisco, Jeana Clemente, Mary Corkern, Ben Freeman III, Jonathan Freeman, Nancy Graham, Andrea Grande, Jill Grimes, Patricia Huffman, Connie Jaco, Sherie Jones, Christie Lee, Tracye Linthicum, Emily Maerz, Kristy Martin, Lora McCartney, Jonathan Meleshenko, Kristen Murray, Ziara Osborne, Kristina Phan, Amy Reynolds, Grace Rivera, Mitchell Szczepanski, and Sarah Valliere. The Collin chapter was established in the spring of 2004 and has inducted 105 since that time.

Dr. Rod Rodriguez, professor of real estate, published his third book, “Texas Real Estate Principles I & II.” In addition, real estate professor Richard Helgeson served as review editor on the book.
Stephanie Hanson, coordinator of Transfer Programs, presented a session on University/Community College Pre-admission Programs at the recent Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers annual conference in Austin. Co-presenting with Hanson were representatives from Sam Houston State University and Texas Tech University.
The Global EDGE Tech Prep consortium was included in the new book, Best Practices: Tech Prep Across the United States, published by the National Association for Tech Prep Leadership. Nine of the 26 consortia were noted, and the Global EDGE is proud to have been one of the nine.
Brian Gresham, a Collin County entrepreneur, has won the New Venture Award in the North Texas Business Plan Competition hosted by the International Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Dallas. He beat out 19 other companies to win the award, which comes with a prize package that includes $1,000 of seed money. The package also includes software, a subscription to the Dallas Business Journal and a website starter package. Gresham is opening a franchised gaming company called Play N Trade. Play N Trade is a store where gamers can buy new and used video games and DVDs.
The dental hygiene program was the subject of a successful accreditation visit. The program received two commendations: Standard III: administration, faculty and staff received commendation for their commitment, excellence in teaching and quality contribution to an excellent program (it was noted that the administrative support exceeded expectations); and Standard IV: educational support services received commendation for the scope and quality of support services. Final approval will be brought before the ADA accreditation review board in July.
On Nov. 9, the Collin Student Veterans Association hosted a successful inaugural event in celebration of Veterans Day at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. More than 100 students, faculty and community members attended the celebration that featured two keynote speakers: B.G. Burkett, author of the book, “Stolen Valor,” and Lt. Col. Jon B. Rivera, Director of Intelligence for the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Speaker Christopher Combest was also featured on the extensive program.
The Second annual ESL Open House hosted by Developmental Education Nov. 21 was a tremendous success. More than 200 people attended, enjoyed cuisine, viewed exhibit items, danced and had a great time during the two-hour event.
