Make room for Sigma Kappa Delta
There’s a new honor society on campus.

A chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta National English Honor Society for Two-Year Colleges is up and running at Collin.

Lauryn Angel-Cann, English professor, was approached last spring to be the faculty advisor for the group that already includes 15 members.

Angel-Cann was chosen to lead the group due to her participation in the four-year equivalent, Sigma Tau Delta.

As a student and now as a faculty member, Angel-Cann knows the importance of honor societies on campus.

“These groups are important because they bring students of like mind together. When you have an event while working on a service project you meet students that you normally wouldn’t meet,” Angel-Cann said. “It adds further enrichment outside of the classroom on every level -- socially and intellectually.”

Angel-Cann will say the group is slowly trying to get its feet wet. But they have already made a splash.

Sigma Kappa Delta has already held several meetings, that are open to the student body and public.

In October, Sigma Kappa Delta hosted its first installment of “Spooky Classics,” a screening of a film adaptation of a piece of literature of the eerie persuasion. This year’s screening was of Vincent Price’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” based on Edgar Allan Poe’s poem.

The group have begun conducting storytime at the Maribelle Davis Library in Plano for first-third graders and they volunteered during the Book-in-Common event at Collin during the visit of author Daniel Wallace.

“We’re slowly but surely finding our place and seeing where we can contribute,” Angel-Cann said.

Students interested in Sigma Kappa Delta must have completed 12 hours of college credit, three of which must be English. Students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average in all English courses and at least 3.3 grade point average overall.

Membership dues are a one-time $50 payment. Afterwards, the student is a member for life.

For more information or to become a member of Sigma Kappa Delta, e-mail Angel-Cann at lacann@ccccd.edu.
