BRIDGES links students to biomedical science
Sometimes, when you want to get where you’re going, you need a bridge.

For those wanting a career in biomedical science, Collin, along with Texas Woman’s University (TWU), offers BRIDGES.

BRIDGES is part of a nationwide initiative to increase the number of underrepresented groups in biomedical research.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), BRIDGES provides an avenue for students to study at Collin while undertaking research at TWU.

Students accepted into the program receive:
  • Research experience with a TWU mentor
  • Paid tuition for research classes taken at TWU
  • Tutoring for science classes at Collin
  • Payment for research done at TWU
  • Travel to science conferences
  • Opportunities to present research at conferences
  • Encouragement to complete a bachelor’s degree with a science major
  • Assistance in applying for financial aid at a university
  • Mentoring and a personal assistance in preparing for a career in science
The two-year BRIDGES program entails learning about careers in biomedical research and touring TWU facilities during the spring semester.

During the summer, students will take a biomedical research course and begin a research project with his or her mentor.

During year No. 2, the student will continue working on research at TWU during the fall and spring semesters.

Students who participate in the BRIDGES program are not obligated to attend TWU once they graduate from the community college.

Interested students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, have an interest in biomedical research, majority in biology, chemistry, mathematics, nutrition, kinesiology or other science, have completed one semester at Collin while maintaining a grade point average of at least 2.8 and be a member of an underrepresented ethnic group.

For more information or to apply to BRIDGES, contact biology chair and professor Dr. David McCulloch at 972.881.6340.
