Collin will host the inaugural national conference for Psi Beta National Honor Society For Community and Junior Colleges on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. The 2006 Psychology Synergy Conference will feature some of the nation’s prominent psychology researchers including Dr. Stephen F. Davis of Texas Wesleyan University and Dr. James Kalat of North Carolina State University. Dr. Davis will present “Cheating in High School is for Grades, Cheating in College is for a Career,” a synopsis of his research in the area of academic ethics, at 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 6. At 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, Dr. Kalat will present “Recent Developments in Biological Psychology.” In addition, the conference includes a number of breakout sessions of specific interest to the psychological community, including relationships between environmental concerns and psychology and ethical dilemmas in contemporary academia. A Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibition will be on display through Oct. 15 at the Spring Creek Camps Learning Resource Center Galleria, second floor. The exhibit will feature a number of student art and prints from renowned Hispanic artists. In addition, a series of Hispanic Heritage Month Musical Performances will be held through Oct. 15 featuring Collin students in the Spring Creek Campus Atrium.
Rockin’ the Ridge is scheduled from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4. at the Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco. The fun-filled event will feature a number of activities, entertainment, food and refreshments in The Quad area between Founder’s Hall and the library. The event is free and open to faculty, staff and students.
Renowned poet and author Pat Mora will host a reading at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, in support of Hispanic Heritage Month. In addition to a reading, Mora’s poetry collections and books will be available for purchase, and she will be on hand to answer questions. Mora has published a number of children’s, young adult and adult poetry and non-fiction books during a distinguished and longstanding career. Her latest works include a children’s book of poetry titled “¡Marimba! The annual Hispanic Heritage Reading will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11. This year’s Hispanic Heritage Reading will feature Hispanic writers from the Caribbean in the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center, section AB.
Collin presents its inaugural Book-in-Common guest Daniel Wallace, author of several novels, including “Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions” in October. The name of this year’s program is “An Alluring Tale.” The events are as follows: • Wednesday, Oct. 11 -- 7 p.m. – a screening of Tim Burton’s “Big Fish” in conjunction with the Auteur Film Series at the Angelika Film Center, The Shops at Legacy, 7205 Bishop Road, Plano. Seating begins at 6:15 p.m. and the screening will be followed by a roundtable discussion facilitated by Collin professors. Free and open to the public. The film is rated PG-13 for violence, some images of nudity and sexual references and runs 125 minutes. • Monday, Oct. 16 – 10 a.m. -- “Baiting the Hook: Honors Institute Pre-Visit Roundtable,” a pre-author roundtable discussion hosted by the Honors Institute at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. • Tuesday, Oct. 17 – 7 p.m. – “Reeling It In: Author Visit and Book Signing.” Wallace will give a lecture, hold a question-and-answer session and be available to sign books and answer questions. This is free and open to the public and will be at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. • Thursday, Nov. 9 – 2-3 p.m. -- "Catch & Release: Reflections on ‘Big Fish’" at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. A roundtable discussion and review of the Book-in-Common event and Wallace’s visit. The Evolution Tango Dance Group will offer a free master class in tango dancing at noon, Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Spring Creek Campus, room A107. A performance will take place following the class.
The 2006-2007 Quad C Theatre season begins in October with a timeless love story by Tennessee Williams, "Orpheus Descending." Directed by Gail Cronauer, the classic Greek myth inspired play documents the tragic romance between a lonely Southern Belle and a handsome young drifter, Orpheus. The bucolic Orpheus descends to rescue his love—not from Hades—but from the intrigue, gossip and violence of an irascible town. The play runs from Oct. 12-22 at the John Anthony Theatre. Next, "Two Rooms" is a political love story by Lee Blessing. Set in a small windowless cell in Beirut, Lebanon, "Two Rooms" tells the poignant story of one man’s captivity by terrorists while chronicling the intense whirlwind of emotional turmoil his wife must endure on the other side of the world. Directed by Brad Baker, "Two Rooms" will run from Oct. 17-22 at the Black Box Theatre. Special note: For Quad C Theatre season subscribers, this production is free. Collin will host its auditions for its 6th annual Talent Show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Spring Creek Campus John Anthony Theatre, 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway in Plano. The audition will seek to represent a broad range of performing arts. Walk-ins are welcome and no pre-registration is required. Two professors will give an outline of the microbiological and historical significance of HIV and AIDS during its fall Knowledge is Power lecture series. Dr. Carrie Bottoms, professor of microbiology, and Dr. Keith Volanto, professor of history, will present “The ABCs of HIV: Fiction and Fact on AIDS” at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Preston Ridge Campus, Room LC104, 9700 Wade Blvd., Frisco. Dr. Bottoms will discuss how HIV is transmitted, how the disease is diagnosed, symptoms, treatments and prevention. Dr. Volanto will discuss the historical background of the virus, its initial impact on the United States and how the burgeoning epidemic was perceived at the time and how that perception has changed. The 2006 Living Legends Tribute ceremony and dinner will be Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Spring Creek Campus conference Center. Proceeds from the event will go toward the Living Legends Endowment Fund, which supports student scholarships and academic success.
