Summertime means growth, job search opportunities
By Amy Lenhart Career Counselor
For many, summertime means time for growth. Take, for example, the recent graduate. Often, the recent graduate is focused on looking for a job, trying to adjust to life after college and trying to “settle in” to a new place.
Being able to plan for these adjustments can be a challenge if you don’t have the right tools to assist you. So, how do you learn to juggle these responsibilities?
First, develop a plan. Devote as much time as possible to finding a job, and schedule time during the week to plot your job search. Your job search will then be starting in the right direction.
“Finding a job is a job,” so making sure that you treat your job search this way is crucial.
Second, make sure that you are not relying on just one source for your job search. For example, do not just rely on looking at the classifieds in the newspaper. Most of the time when people get a job, it is through networking. An estimated 80 percent of jobs are found this way. Try to go to local job networking groups in the area to help with this.
Third, stop by Career Services and Co-op on each campus to assist you with your job search. Also, note the following job search and interviewing workshops offered to you this summer through our Professional Development Seminar Schedule.
These workshops are free and open to the public.
· " Anger and Rage, Aggressiveness and Assertiveness" will be from 3-5 p.m., Thursday, July 6, at the Spring Creek Campus, Room G212. This workshop explores techniques on handling anger and other emotions in the workplace. Presented by Amy Lenhart, career counselor at Collin Career Services.
· “Sales Techniques to Get the Job You Want” is scheduled from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 13, at the Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development, Room B115; and noon-2 p.m., Wednesday, July 26, at the Spring Creek Campus, Room F110. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch to this presentation. Presented by Fred Shlesinger, sales professional and certified financial planner in Dallas.
· “Teamwork in the Workplace” will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 21, at the Courtyard Center for Professional and Economic Development, Room B115. This interactive seminar will highlight the importance of synergy among co-workers. Presented by Todd Benatovich, manager of professional services and sales at CompUSA Technology Services in Dallas.
· “Keeping Out of the Black Hole: Personal Money Management” is set from 8:30-10:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 5 and “How to Contribute to a Productive Work Environment” from 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Both workshops will be at the Courtyard for Professional and Economic Development, Room B115. The former, presented by the staff of Consumer Credit Counseling Services of North Texas, will help attendees find the truth about credit cards, paying off debts faster and other aspects of money management. The latter will provide information about being responsible in the work environment and will be presented by David Cegelski of Dynamic Growth Strategies in Dallas.
Collin’s Career Services and Co-op provides a number of services including career and occupational information, career counseling and planning, personal career assessments, on- and off-campus employment and seminars.
