Collin League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) swept the state awards as Eddy and Liz Trejo, brother and sister, were named Young Man and Woman of the Year, respectively. Also, Lisabeth Lassiter won Advisor of the Year and the college’s organization was named Council of the Year.

Adam Rucker, Collin student, was one of the top six finalists in the Kid Kraddick Morning Show Jingle Contest.

Scott Yarbrough
Scott Yarbrough, professor of English, has had the following pieces published within the last year: “Protesting Plath” and “Rosa Parks” in issue No. 3 of Zillah: A Poetry Journal; “Upon Contemplating the Tile Floor in Isla Mujeres" ” in the spring 2006 issue of the Dallas Poets Literary Magazine; "“Medusa” and “Sunday School Lesson” in the spring 2006 Spindrift: Art and Literary Journal; “"The Speech Your Analyst Will Never Make”" and “Playground Rules” in the July 2006 issue of Pointed Circle; and “"I Want to Die Like Johnny Cash”" in the fall 2005 of Concho Literary Review. Yarbrough’s poem “Sunday School Lesson” was named first placed winner in the adult division of the Sixth annual Richardson Public Library Poetry Contest. The poem “Medusa” was featured in a dramatic monologue titled “From Victim to Survivor: Mythology ”at the Bath House Cultural Center on White Rock Lake in April. He also spoke at the McKinney Chamber of Commerce quarterly luncheon about “Civic Entrepreneurship.”

Director of Fire Science and EMS Pat McAuliff contributed a story in the new book "“Firefighters from the Heart. ” The book is a compilation of true stories written by some of America’'s greatest firefighters.

Collin won two bronze Telly Awards for outstanding achievement for two videos produced by TV programming and production associate Vernon Hadnot. The winning videos were the, Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2006 video and Cougar TV public service announcement. The Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. The 26th annual Telly Awards received more than 12,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents.

Rod Rodriguez
Real estate professor Rod Rodriguez co-authored the recently published book “TEXAS Real Estate Agency.”

Coordinator of International Student Services Rebecca Crowell was named Region III Development Chair of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

Child development professor Sharon Hirschy co-presented at the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education International Conference in March 2006. Her paper titled “Examining the Uses of Technology with the Youngest Learner" has been published in the Society’s's Proceedings.

Professor of sociology John Glass published "Asking 'dumb' questions," in the American Sociology Association's newsletter Teaching/Learning Matters and “The United Nations and Adoption” in The Praeger Handbook of Adoption.

Henry Whalen signs the word 'chat.'
Henry Whalen, professor of the Interpreter Preparation Program/Deaf, began serving on the Texas Education Association’s Statewide Plan for Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students Committee.

Shawn Stewart
Shawn Stewart, public relations writer, will have an article on Henry David Thoreau published in the peer-reviewed journal The Concord Saunterer, an annual publication of the Thoreau Society. Stewart’s article, “Transcendental Romance Meets the ‘Ministry of Pain’: The Thoreau Brothers, Ellen Sewall, and Her Father,” examines the “transcendental triangle,” a love affair involving Henry David Thoreau, his older brother John, and a young minister’s daughter named Ellen Devereux Sewall.


College News

Collin’s Teacher Certification Program was reaccredited by the Texas Education Agency. Reaccreditation is based on annual student performance on state teacher certification exams. The college’s program has consistently maintained high accountability ratings since its inception. The 2005 examination pass rate was 99 percent.

Former Collin Assistant Baseball Coach Chris Sampson made his first start for the Houston Astros June 8 versus the Chicago Cubs. Sampson coached at Collin from 2001-02. Sampson pitched seven innings allowing no runs and only three hits.
