Tennis teams cap off successful years; Berryman captures honor
 |
| Collin mens and womens tennis teams | The goal of the men’s and women’s Cougar tennis squads, according to coach Marty Berryman, is to both be top five in the nation.
The two teams almost did just that as the men’s team finished third in the nation and the women finished sixth, after playing in their respective national tournaments.
Overall, the women finished 13-8 and the men finished 13-3. Both won Region V division.
“We are ecstatic about our finishes,” Berryman said. “The focal point is at the end of the year, and it is good to have sophomores that have played in the national tournament. That’s what the best teams do and we want to be one of the best teams.”
For the fifth straight year, the division I and III National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) men’s tournament was held at Collin.
“We have a lot of people who help us – whether it’s administration or facilities – and it is a pleasure to have a tournament of this magnitude and to perform so well,” Berryman said.

As an added honor to the tennis season, Berryman was named the NJCAA Coach of the Year May 14 at the Southfork Hotel.

| Marty Berryman | Berryman has been named the NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year six times and coached four women’s and four men’s NJCAA national champions.
He is a member of the NJCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame and led both squads to a 13-3 2005-06 record.
