Viewpoints winners announced
THE ARTS gallery announced its winners for the Viewpoints 2006 exhibition. The annual statewide juried student show includes painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, small metals and jewelry.
-Mirtha Aertker, Allen, was named Best in Show for her work including the pictured “The Last Flight.”

Carole Martin, Allen, placed second in the 3D category for her work titled "I Think There's a Hole in My Diaphragm."
Jin-Young Park, Plano, poses next to her body of work, which won second place in 2D.
Plano resident Michael Robinson with one of the winning third place 3D entries from his body of work, "Inside and Out."
The winners were:
• Best of Show: Mirtha Aertker (Allen) -- 3D art
• Director's Choice: Kim Etherington (Plano) -- 2D art
• 1st Place 3D: Carolyn Helvey (Bonham)
• 1st Place 2D: Wou Jin Colon (Plano)
• 2nd Place 3D: Carole Martin (Allen)
• 2nd Place 2D: Jin-Young Park (Plano)
• 3rd Place 3D: Micheal James Robinson (Plano)
• 3rd Place 2D: Barbara Dubovsky (Plano)

The prize-winning students were awarded cash stipends, and Aertker will be the featured artist at the gallery’s Art Student Scholarship Show next summer.

Vicki Mayhan, director of THE ARTS gallery, said she chose Etherington’s piece for the Director’s Choice award because “of the formal issues involved. Her gestural approach to the figure was fresh and not overworked. The piece clearly exhibits a mastery of the media and an interesting negotiation of form and content."

The Viewpoints 2006 juror was Jack Alan Ousey, who holds a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Manitoba in Canada and a master’s degree from the University of North Dakota. He currently is an art professor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and a teaching artist with the Oklahoma Art Council and a board member of the Red River Arts Council.

His work is primarily clay sculpture and is on display in galleries in Oklahoma, Texas, Florida and North Dakota.

“The diversity and quality of work submitted for this year’s exhibit made jurying a very enjoyable but difficult task,” Ousey said. “I was pleasantly surprised by the maturity and depth of artwork being explored at the college level. I was particularly impressed with the sculptures and paintings being produced.”
