College News
Earth/International Day 2006 was April 19 at the Preston Ridge Campus. This year’s event, “One Earth, Many Cultures,” featured how to create your own mini-garden, a plant give-away (with donations going to Habitat for Humanity), UBUNTU art exhibit, a Segway demo and rides, hybrid cars, ethnic food, music, art, vendors and much more. The event was well attended by students, faculty and staff. 

More than 90 students, faculty, parents and teachers attended the Science Day activities on Saturday, April 22 at the Spring Creek Campus. This year’s Science Day featured students from Bowman Middle School in Plano and Ford Middle School in Allen. Activity sessions were held in math, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, environmental geology and anatomy and physiology.

Collin’s culinary arts department hosted a hospitality forum April 6 at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. Seven professional hospitality organizations were present to talk with students about membership and career opportunities, including the Texas Chefs’ Association, Research Chefs’ Association, Meeting Professionals International, National Association of Catering Executives, Hotel Association of Greater Dallas, Greater Dallas Restaurant Association, and Hotel Sales and Marketing Association International. Representatives from the Hospitality and Culinary Student Association, Johnson & Wales University, Conrad N. Hilton School of Hotel & Restaurant Management and the University of North Texas attended. On Tuesday, April 4, poet Frederick Turner, founders professor of Arts and Humanities at UTD, visited Collin.

More than 100 students, faculty and community members crowded into the Spring Creek Conference Center to hear Dr. Frederick Turner read with passion his acclaimed poetry. That evening, 50 more audience members assembled at Spring Creek Campus to attend a panel discussion about poetry writing and publishing in front of students in Professor and Honors Institute Chair Scott Yarbrough's poetry writing class. In addition to Dr. Turner, panel members professor Peggy Brown and associate professor Billy Bob Hill read their poetry and responded with insight to stimulating questions from members of the class.

Collin won first place in the continuing educatoin webpage category for its Continuing Education and Workforce Development website. This is the second year in a row that Collin’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development division has received first place distinction from Texas Association of Continuing Education (TACE) in this category. Collin also won first place in the continuing education web-based Course Schedule & Registration category. This is the third year in a row that Collin’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development division has received first place distinction from TACE in this category.

The Medical Library Association’s March 2006 newsletter features a story about the Consumer Health Information Center at the Central Park Campus. The article said, “Collin County Community College is possibly the only community college with a consumer health library.” The LRC at Central Park also participated in “Read Across McKinney.” The event was a huge success, with involvement from many people and organizations throughout the community. Library Executive Director Bobbie Long served on the Steering Committee for “Read Across McKinney.”
