Summer Student Profile
Editor's Note: A Cougar News correspondent interviewed a former Collin summer school student who is currently at a university.

Name: Rebecca Goldberg, but I go by "Becca"

Hometown: Plano

Age: 20

Status: The University of Kansas student, Collin summer student

Major: Secondary English Education, expected graduation with a bachelor of arts this December 2006. Then I will be doing my student teaching, and getting my masters of science in curriculum and instruction. I’ll be done with that expected Spring 2008. I am hoping to work as a secondary English teacher, preferably in the Plano area.

High school: Graduated from Plano West Senior High School in 2003.

Which classes did you take at Collin in the summer?
I took the general biology lecture and lab. Also, I have taken physical geography and world literature.

Any memorable instructors?
Both my geography and literature teachers were memorable for me. My geography teacher was kind of going through a tough time that summer, yet still made sure that we were learning the material. He made teaching us his first priority, no matter what else was going on his life. My literature teacher is memorable because of the extreme knowledge she had in the topics she was teaching us.

The person who inspired me:
The person that I have always felt the most inspired by is my dad, Larry Goldberg. He has always taught me to try my hardest to do my best, and when things get tough, that’s what I tell myself. I admire my father and feel like he has inspired me in many more ways that he could ever know.

Why do you think it’s important to go to summer school?
I think that it is important to commit to your education. I wanted to get ahead and for me summer school was the right way to do that.

Does it really help to have more attention/smaller class sizes in class?
I don't think class size is as important as the attention that you receive. At Collin, I felt like my professors were willing to give me much needed attention, whether it was in my 50-person biology lecture or my 15-person English class.

Did your summer classes transfer easily to the university?
Yes, my summer classes transferred really easily, not just to my university but also to my school, the school of education. Both easily accepted the credit.

Why did you take summer classes at Collin?
I wanted to try and get ahead in my studies. And, it worked -- I am graduating early!

What is your opinion of the level of instruction you received while you were here?
My opinion of the instruction at Collin is very high. I took three different classes there and in each one was able to get the help I needed, whether that was in class or one on one. I also felt like my professors really cared about me as a person and were willing to help when I needed it.
