College News
Collin hosted the North Texas Regional Community College Technology Forum 2006 Feb. 17, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. The event's theme was "Looking at the Digital Future: Campus Policy and Practice." The focus of the forum featured technology integration in the classroom, in addition to enhancing the college's ability to service students and increase administrative efficiencies. Keynote speaker Marc Prensky, founder and CEO of Games2train, presented "A New Campus Underground: How studnets really use technology and why it matters." The presentation addressed the opportunities and responsibilities for community colleges as students embrace the digital age. Prensky is an internationally renowned speaker, writer, consultant and gaming designer. His newest book, "Don't Bother Me Mom -- I'm Learning" is due out soon. He has created more than 50 software games for learning and been featured in print and TV. He was named one of training's top 10 "visionaries by Training magazine and holds degrees from Yale and Harvard.

Angelos Angelou
2006 Collin County Economic Summit
was held Feb. 1 at the Spring Creek Campus. About 300 people attended the biennial event which featured Angelos Angelou of AngelouEconomics in Austin and Joseph C. Juarez, regional administrator of the Employment and Training Administration in Dallas as the event's keynote speakers. In addition, a number of break out sessions were held discussing issues such as healthcare, the aging workforce, transportation and much more.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast, held at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center Jan. 16, had about 400 people in attendance – the largest number ever for the event. It was an interactive and engaging forum regarding the ideas and leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The audience heard from state, county and local leaders.

The annual Transfer Fair was held in January, sponsored by Recruitment and Programs for New Students. Representatives from about 45 colleges and universities were at the event helping students planning on transferring with financial aid, course transfer, housing and more.

Collin Foundation Board member Sandy Simpson was given The Spirit of Frisco award and board member Maher Maso was named Frisco’s 2006 Citizen of the Year, awarded by the Frisco Chamber of Commerce.

Recruitment and Programs for New Students hosted almost 200 students at the beginning of the semester during New Student Orientation events. For the year, 999 students were served in the orientation program.

Collin County Health Care Services administered 88 free flu shots at the Spring Creek Campus, 50 at the Courtyard, 100 at Central Park Campus and 120 at Preston Ridge Campus.

Collin students gave a little hope to Latin American children this holiday season. As part of Project Esperanza (Hope), students in professor Sandra Herron’s Spanish classes collected two truckloads of toys for children in Bolivia, particularly in La Paz, Potosi and Santa Cruz, and the Dominican Republic. Items such as stuffed animals, board games, Barbie dolls and toy cars were sent to children in need over the holiday. Other items sent to children were shoes, clothes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, combs, diapers and computers for Bolivian orphanages.




“Don’t Know Much About Anatomy: A Survey of Undergraduate Knowledge” by Collin Psi Beta research group, consisting of students Kim Tanuvasa, Jessica Shreve, Brian Zadorozny, Rickey Lummus and Lisa Dunshee won recognition at the Great Plains annual Psychology Conference and placed first at the Llano Estacado at Texas Tech. The piece will be published in volume 11 of “The Journal of Psychological Inquiry” in the fall. Psi Beta advisors are Dr. Valerie Smith and Jennifer O’Loughlin Brooks.

Art student Brad Hagen was selected to receive a $250 scholarship from the Junior League in Plano in conjunction with the ArtCentre of Plano based on a review of his art. His pieces were exhibited at the ArtCentre of Plano in February.

Shilah Phillips, a Collin vocal student, was named Miss Frisco 2006. Phillips sang with the Jaztet One ensemble in addition to the Collin vocal group, Expressions, under the direction of professor Kathy Morgan. Phillips will participate in the Miss Texas pageant during the Independence Day weekend and she plans to transfer to the University of North Texas.




Collin music professor Kris Berg was selected to direct the Montana All State Jazz Ensemble in May. 

A second edition resource guide for chemists considering academic careers titled “And Gladly Teach,” co-authored by chemistry professor Amina El-Ashmawy, was recently published as a project of the American Chemical Society.

Art professor Marilyn Todd-Daniel’s works were displayed at the 14th Street Gallery in Plano – a 40-year retrospective called A Strong String of Pearls “Seasons of the Soul.” In addition, Bill Patterson’s outdoor oil painting class was exhibited in February.

Art professor Paul Booker will be featured in P.R.I.N.T., a fine art press affiliated with the University of North Texas School of Visual Arts.

Winners of the National Wear RED Day drawing were: Rebecca Gunning and Rhona Walker, Courtyard Center Leslie Cuellar and Vicki Woolverton, Central Park Campus Donna Day and Linda White, Preston Ridge Campus G’Anna Saunders and Carol White, Spring Creek Campus There was a drawing on each campus. Those individuals that wore red on National Wear RED Red Day to heighten awareness of heart disease were eligible to put their names in a box on each campus.
Rebecca Boatman, professor of art, exhibited a mixed media sculpture at the El Corazon Invitational at the Bath House Cultural Center.

Elizabeth Mellott-Carreon exhibited works from the series “Decorated” at the 4th biennial Artist Book Competition at the University of North Texas. Mellott-Carreon’s work from “This War Between Us” will be shown at The University of Texas at Dallas through April 15.
