Calendar Dates
The Plain and Fancy Ball Saturday, March 4 will feature dancing, music, outrageous wardrobes, gaming tables and food. The second annual foundation fundraiser goes Texas-Style in raising money for scholarships from 7-10 p.m. at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. Plain and Fancy Ball sponsorship levels include “Hipster” at $1,000, “In-Crowd” at $2,500, “Jet Set” at $5,000, “High Society” at $10,000 and “Philanthropist” at $20,000. The Quad C Theatre will present Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror (Puppet) Show” Thursday-Saturday, March 2-4 and March 8-11 at 8 p.m. and March 5 and 11-12 at 2:15 p.m. Shows will be at the John Anthony Theatre at the Spring Creek Campus. Performances on March 5 and March 10 will be sign-interpreted for patrons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Call 972.881.5809 for tickets. THE ARTS gallery will showcase “Complementarity,” a mixed media installation by Texas Wesleyan faculty through Thursday, March 9. Student Life and the pre-med/biology club will be hosting a presentation titled “The CSI of Collin County” featuring the chief field officer from the Collin County medical examiner’s office. The featured presentation will be from 10-11:15 a.m., Tuesday, March 21, at the Central Park Campus. The event is free and open to the public. The Auteur Film Series, titled “Food for Thought,” will present “Eat Drink Man Woman” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 22, at the Spring Creek Campus Conference Center. Mr. Chu is the master of the kitchen, but he begins to lose his control over his daughters, who have their eyes set for the outside world. The film is 123 minutes and is not rated. Following the movie, a panel discussion led by several Collin faculty and staff will be held in order to discuss the film and its themes. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and seating is limited. The screening is free and open to the public. International Day is scheduled from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Thursday, March 23, in the Spring Creek Campus Atrium. All students are invited to participate in the Parade of Nations, fashion show and talent show. Students are encouraged to don cultural wardrobe and visit the various tables representing the varying countries. “energy II” will be the featured collection at THE ARTS gallery Thursday, March 23-Saturday, April 8. “energy II” is work from Collin graphic arts students from the AGDT program. The 14th annual Collin Jazz Festival takes place Friday-Saturday, March 24-25 in the John Anthony Theatre on the Spring Creek Campus at 8 p.m. Friday night the opening concert features Grammy-nominated jazz trumpet legend Bobby Shew and local jazz drummer Michael Drake. Collin's Jaztet One opens and the jazz faculty join Shew and Drake for the second half of the concert. Tickets are $10 at the door. Shew is active worldwide as both a performer and educator. He has performed with such greats as Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Oliver Nelson, and been featured on TV. As a bandleader, his albums “Outstanding in His Field” was nominated for a Grammy. On Saturday, more than 20 Texas high school bands will perform. This is free and open to the public. Saturday night’s awards concert closes the festival with Collin's Jazz Lab band and the Texas Instruments Jazz Band performing, again featuring Bobby Shew. Tickets are $10 at the door. The Collin Dance Ensemble will present their spring dance concert, “Rebirth,” at 8 p.m., Friday-Saturday, April 7-8, at the John Anthony Theatre on the Spring Creek Campus. The Middle Eastern Student Association invites the college to attend “One Thousand and One Nights” from 7 p.m.-midnight, Saturday, April 22, in the Spring Creek Campus Atrium. The event will feature food, dancing, live Middle Eastern music, belly dancers and competition, folkloric troupe and much more. For more information, contact MESA@ccccd.edu.
