Faculty and Staff News
Roberta Jackson, assistant director of Professional Development, was awarded level one certification in the inaugural professional development certificate program co-sponsored by the National Council for Staff, Program and Organizational Development and the Institute for Community College Development at Cornell University. Jackson was one of seven individuals who successfully completed the program.

Psychology professors Valerie T. Smith and Jennifer L. O’Loughlin-Brooks presented a symposium titled “Creating a Successful Psychology Student Philanthropy Course” at the annual Southwestern Teachers of Psychology Conference at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Nov. 19.

Kris Berg, professor of music, was selected to be the guest director for the 2006 Texas Bandmasters Association Texas All-State Collegiate Jazz Band. The group meets in August at the convention in San Antonio and is comprised of the best Texas jazz students from four-year universities and colleges.

The Consumer Health Information Center and Carolyn Jones, financial aid/VA coordinator, were featured in the Oct. 25 issue of Community College Times. Jones was mentioned for being named to the Texas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators board. The center was recognized for receiving the express consumer health outreach award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region.

Professor of Developmental Reading Marilyn Rice was one of 20 individuals selected to serve on the reading panel being assembled by the National Assessment Governing Board , U.S. Department of Education. More than 70 nominations were received for this project from a total of 77 institutions that were contacted.

Professors Elaine Boski-Wilkinson and Sharon Hirschy were nominated to serve as co-presidents elect of The Child Development Educator Association at the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children state conference in Austin. They will be sworn into office at Texas Community College Teachers Association in February. *An estimated 200 students, faculty and staff attended the lecture series event At the Root of It: Stems Cells & Society on November 16 at the Preston Ridge Campus.

Professors Sukanya Subramanian and Brett Adams presented this successful lecture. The Partners in Programming: Student Life, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Math & Natural Sciences coordinate the Knowledge is Power Lecture Series which brings current topics to our campuses.

Five members of the Collin Speech Communication department gave presenations at the November convention of the National Communication Association in Boston. Dr. Shelley D. Lane moderated a panel titled, "Civil Communication: Promoting Healthy Discourse on Campus and in the Community," and she presented information about teaching communication courses using a framework of civility. Jessica Weisel discussed how civil communication can be fostered and maintained in the classroom setting. Ceilidh Charleson spoke about "e-civility" and how it can be fostered and maintained among online students and in distance learning classes. Sherry Rhodes shared specific assignments that can promote civil communication on campus and in the community. At the same conference, Angela Putman participated in the G.I.F.T.S. (Great Ideas For Teaching Speech) program and co-chaired a panel titled, "Faculty Culture Shock: Adjusting to a New College and Diverse Student Populations."
