Collin, SMU welcome new dual admissions students
(From left) Collin students Crystal Ford, Sarah Stevens, Yanina Kohut, Jonathan Hayot, Jennifer Cady, Cher Smalling and Perry Leggett were formally inducted in to the dual admission program with SMU.
Southern Methodist University (SMU) hosted a dual reception to welcome the Collin dual admissions students Oct. 12.

Five Collin students were formally welcomed to the program by SMU and Collin administrators at the event, which featured current dual admissions students who are completing their bachelor’s degrees at the university. The new students are Jonathan Hayot, Jennifer Cady, Yanina Kohut, Perry Leggett and Sarah Stephens.

Collin has dual admission program with five area universities – SMU, Texas A&M University-Commerce, Texas Woman’s University, the University of North Texas and The University of Texas at Dallas. Through these partnerships students attend Collin while working with advisors in their chosen majors from those universities.

Collin students receive access to a number of amenities including university libraries, tickets to lectures and sporting events, passes to university wellness centers and more.

Sarah Stephens, 18, of Allen, is a freshman at Collin and she is studying business. She is an incoming dual admissions student whose sister, Adrienne, will graduate in December from SMU after going through the program herself.

“She had a lot of success with it,” Stephens said of her sister. “I wanted to start at Collin, but I knew I wanted to go to SMU later.”

Perry Leggett, a 23-year-old Allen sophomore, heard about dual admissions from an advisor. “I really wanted to go to SMU, and I saw this as a perfect opportunity to get involved with the school,” he said.

Cecilia Lai, 22, from Plano, will join Stephens this December in graduating from SMU. She liked the dual admission program because she knew she would not lose hours when she transferred.

“It is a good path for them,” Lai said of the new dual admission students. “SMU has a lot of resources.”

The SMU program is limited to 20 students per year and application can be made to the program for fall and spring admittance. For more information about the dual admissions program, call Stephanie Hanson at 972.985.3734 or visit http://transferu.ccccd.edu/smu.html.
