Basketball players jump into community service
Collin basketballers are racking up assists on and off the court.
Again, the college men’s and women’s cagers are lending a hand in the community with several service projects.
Twenty -year-old forward Mark Phillips is a mentor to a Thomas Elementary student, Alex. Phillips visits the Plano elementary every Thursday around lunchtime and the two talk.
“He just likes to talk about his home life, school and his activities like Cub Scouts. He gets very excited about it all,” Phillips said.
Last year, the players visited Hedgecoxe Elementary in Plano and read to classes of students. This year’s approach is a more one-one-one atmosphere, which Phillips prefers. He said he and Alex have become more like friends or brothers during their time together.

“It is personal,” he said. “We really get to know these kids.”
Men’s basketball head coach Jim Sigona said the players were paired with students needing a mentor.
“Later in life, it would be great to do these type of projects,” Phillips said. “(Alex) needed someone to talk to, and I am happy to be there for him.”
The players also will volunteer with Hunger Busters, a local organization which helps feed the homeless. They travel to four locations and hand out food to those in need including soups, sandwiches and fruit.
