National depression screenings available to students

In order to help students cope with the stress and anxiety of college, Collin Counseling Services is now offering year-round screenings for a range of common emotional and developmental issues that often go unattended and are misunderstood.

These areas of concern will be highlighted during the month of October as Collin participates in the national initiative to raise awareness.

Counseling Services will be offering confidential screenings for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

At the screening, individuals can fill out a questionnaire and talk with a counselor about their personal situations. Even if individuals do not have mood or anxiety concerns and are just going through a couple of bad days, they are invited to come take advantage of the program and learn about what services are available on campus.

“Students need to understand that depression and anxiety are not character flaws or personal weaknesses,” Director of Counseling Linda Qualia said. “They are illnesses that are highly responsive to treatment. If you have not been feeling like yourself lately, you should come and take a free, anonymous screening at our counseling offices.”

For a screening or more information, visit a counseling office at the Spring Creek Campus, Suite C225, Central Park Campus, A221 or Preston Ridge Campus, F167, or call 972.881.5126.
