College, Faculty and Staff News
Collin Trustees Chairman Sam Roach, Vice Chairman Dr. J. Robert Collins, and President Cary Israel presented “Exemplary Trustee Leadership Brings Innovation to the Community College” at the Association of Community College Trustees National Convention Sept. 7 in Seattle.
Collin’s business office has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2004. The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. This is the 8th year the college has received the certificate which is awarded by the Government Finance Officers Association.
The college has been awarded about $120,000 in grant challenge funds from the Hoblitzelle Foundation for the James & Pat Ashton Center for Health Studies. Funds were matched for the grant by Medical Center of Plano, Baylor Regional Medical Center of Plano, and Henry L. and Laura H. Shoap Fund. These funds will allow the college to add a classroom in the nursing program.
Faculty and Staff News Philosophy professor Dr. James Kirk represented Collin at the Oxford Round Table at Lincoln College of Oxford University in England in August. The seminar concerned the relation of religion, government and education. Kirk’s paper was titled “Conviction and Tolerance: Religion, Education and Government in a Pluralistic Society. “ Associate faculty member Mary Ann Pauken also attended the sessions.

Photography chair Byrd Williams will have an exhibition Oct. 3-Jan. 18 in the Law Building, Lower Brown Corridor gallery of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
Director of the Center for Scholarly and Civic Engagement Regina Hughes has been selected to serve on the 2005-07 Editorial Review Board forThe Journal for Civic Commitment, a publication of the Community College National Center for Community Engagement. This is Hughes’ second term on the review board which includes community college personnel selected from across the nation.
Professor Marilyn Massey’s article titled “Service-Learning Projects in Data Interpretation” was among 24 articles published in MAA Notes #66, Mathematics in Service to the Community: Concepts and Models for Service-Learning in the Mathematical Sciences. Her article was one of only two by community college professor to be included.
