TOMMOROW!! Join Us as We Celebrate the Culture, Arts, Entertainment, and Businesses that Characterize the African American Experience.

 The Capital City African Chamber of Commerce (CCAACC) presents the 1st Annual Black Expo to be held on January 31, 2009 beginning at 12:00 pm at the Monarch Event Center. Our 1st Annual Black Expo features a day-long schedule of family activities including a free Vendor Exhibition, Soulful Taste of Austin Cook Off, a Step Show and closing out the event - an Ol' School Jam! Austin's own Diva Chef, Angela Medearis, and Chef G from TVOne (of Los Angeles) will judge the Cook-Off! Wow what a treat!! Don't miss this event!

    This event will establish connections between the CCAACC and small businesses while entertaining and serving the community of Austin. Fun for the whole family, this event will include an expo style vendor exhibit, where businesses can showcase their operations goods and services.

    This event will further our mission in bringing small businesses to greater prosperity through knowledge, by empowering the community in a fun way that will bring better awareness of available resources and improve the outlook of small businesses in Austin.

    As we connect with others at the beginning of this New Year, time draws closer to the Black Expo. Don’t miss a chance to participate, whether as a sponsor, a vendor or an attendee.  Come join us in our journey to build a tradition of success!

Council Member Shery Cole and the Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce present "A Conversation with Black Elected Officials". A panel of elected officials will gather on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Omni Austin Downtown Hotel, 700 Lavaca, to discuss the priorities of each elected official and answer questions about challenges facing African Americans in Austin.

A "Conversation with Black Elected Officials" will include a panel discussion with the elected officials talking about their experience as an African American elected official, challenges facing African American in Austin, and the actions that the African American community can take in support of the elected African American leadership in Austin.

The Capital City African-American Chamber of Commerce promotes the development of African American businesses and the expansion of the business community by proving resources, technical assistance and leadership on policy issues that enhance economic growth and by promoting convention and tourism.



 


 

Capital Metro MetroRail Open House

Next month, Capital Metro will host five Open Houses at several stations along the new passenger rail line opening this March. These events will offer future customers the chance to see the train, learn how to use the ticket vending machines and receive service information.

The open houses are open to the public and people can stop by at anytime during the event. Except for the Leander Open House, parking will be limited. Riding the bus or carpooling is encouraged.

Sign Language interpreters for the Deaf will be available. Any reasonable accommodations need to be requested 3 days in advance by contacting Nancy Crowther at (512) 389-7583 or nancy.crowther@capmetro.org.

Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting

The official grand opening of the Capital MetroRail Red Line will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony with special remarks, live music and other fun activities.

Station Celebrations
After the ceremony at the Downtown Station, festivities will begin at each of the remaining eight stations. Free rides on Capital MetroRail will be offered.

CCAACC Golf Tournament 2009 Update

The Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce will be holding their annual Golf Tournament on Monday, April 20th. Help Support Black History Month Literature

The Texas Water Development Board would like to display literature (pamphlets, brochures, etc.) promoting African-American non-profit and professional organizations in the Stephen F. Austin Building during Black History Month. They have asked us to contact our members to see if any ofyou would be interested in providing materials that have information about what you do/who you are, to be displayed. Left-over materials will not be returned to you.

If you are interested, please contact Carla Daws, 463-8176 or carla.daws@twdb.state.tx.us. We recommend you call Carla and let her know if you mail or drop off items so she will know to look for them.

Financial Workshops For Individual Investors

Whether you're a novice investor or a seasoned veteran, you will be interested to know that Edward Jones is offering an investment class, and they would like to invite you to join them.

The class begins with the very basics of finances, including examining some of the most common reasons why people fail to meet their investment goals, some money management tips that can help make sure you don't fall into those traps and rules that every investor should know and follow.

Classes are every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m at the Highpointe Amenities Center. Seating is limited to 10. There is a one-time workbook/material fee of $13. If interested in attending, RSVP to Trish Morgan at (512) 894-0665.
