MLK March and Community Festival

To celebrate the national MLK day holiday, the Heritage Council is sponsoring the 2009 Community March. The purpose of this 16th annual Community March is to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in our city. The 2009 MLK Community March kicks off at 9 a.m. with a short program at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus. We will then march to the Capitol for a brief program. Thereafter, we will march to the historic Huston-Tillotson University, where exciting activities are planned.

The Heritage Council is planning a Cultural Festival which will begin after the March and last until 2 p.m.; it will include all types of vendors and local musical artists to make the 2009 Celebration the best ever! A vendor application can be downloaded below for those interested in purchasing booth space. For questions and information, please contact
Carol Wright by email or by telephone at (512) 323-6773 ext. 102.

In previous years, the march has drawn up to an estimated 15,000 people and we are anticipating even more individuals to unite for this special occasion in January 2009. All businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march with us and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.

CAPITAL METRO BUS SERVICE INFORMATION

A change in federal regulations in 2008 prevents Capital Metro from providing event shuttle service to/from the MLK festivities. Click on the map icon for a Parking and Transportation Map detailing the bus routes, stops, and parking areas. Additional information about Capital Metro bus routes and schedules is available on the Capital Metro Web site at www.capmetro.org.

AISD Wants Input On New School Boundaries

The Austin School District Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, January 20, to discuss proposed boundaries and a proposed alternative grade configuration for the new Southwest Middle School, currently under construction at 7412 Slaughter Lane.

Citizens Communication will be held beginning at 7 p.m. Citizens may sign up to speak from 7:45 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. in Room A-250 of the Carruth Administration Center; and from 4:45 until 7 p.m. in the Board Auditorium, B-100. Sixty speakers will be heard, at 1-1/2 minutes each.

Opening in August 2009, the new school will relieve overcrowding at Bailey and Small middle schools; and proposed changes would affect Bailey, Small, Covington, and Paredes middle schools. Maps of proposed school boundaries are available for viewing at the meetings and on the AISD website, www.austinisd.org.

Also under review is a one-year proposal to open the school in 2009-2010 as an intermediate center for grades five and six, relieving overcrowding at several area elementary schools until a new elementary opens in 2010. As proposed, the Southwest Middle School would convert to a traditional grades 6-8 model in 2010.

Trustees are scheduled to make decisions about the school boundaries, grade configuration, and school name on Monday, January 26.
