Power of Three Equals Success For Equal Opportunity Employment

The 2nd Annual Multicultural Career Expo was recently held Tuesday, November 18th at the Wyndham Garden Hotel from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The expo came as a combined effort from the Capital City African American Chamber, the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber, the Austin Asian American Chamber and the City Of Austin. The schedule began with an Inaugural Ribbon Cutting Ceremony lead by Assistant City Manager Michael McDonald, CCAACC President Dr. Chiquita W. Eugene, GAHCC President Andy Martinez and AAACC President Ali Khataw. The event featured classroom sessions on Job-Junting Skills, Resume Writing as well as Interviewing Techniques. The sessions were a lead into the career fair that showcased over 50 employers within the Greater Austin community eager to recruit new employees. Employment fields ranged in various forms of retail to financial institutions to law enforcement. A mixer reception with door prizes ended the affair. The combined efforts of the three multicultural chambers successfully reached over 130 job seekers in the Austin community and will continue their success into the next year.

Learn How To Handle A Disaster

SAVE THE DATE EVENT REMINDER! Natural disasters can strike a moment's notice. The impact of Hurricane Katrina and ,most recently, Hurricane Ike have taught us that we as a community should be prepared to handle these type of situations, beforehand and after. In lieu of this knowledge, we will be holding a Disaster Recovery and Resiliency Training Workshop at Austin City Hall. The workshop will take place Wednesday, December 10th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 301 W. 2nd. St. Admission is free. Please RSVP you attendance by contacting Aarin Brewer at (512) 459-1181 ext. 202 or email abrewer@capcitychamber.org.

Be On The Lookout

Volunteer to Impact 20,000 Families

At the Community Tax Centers, volunteers help low-income families claim millions of dollars in tax refunds and credits. By providing free income tax preparation services, IRS certified volunteers give working families a chance to build a financial future.
For the 2009 tax season, they need over 500 volunteers to reach their goal of completing 20,000 tax returns and putting $26 million back into the pockets of those who need it most. What is takes to volunteer:
  • Complete 8 hours of New Volunteer Training
  • A commitment of just 3hrs/wk, or a total of 36 hours, between January and April
  • CPE credits are offered for CPA’s that receive their IRS certification and volunteer the 36 hours requested
  • A desire to give back to YOUR community
There are 10 conveniently located tax centers throughout Austin, including one in Round Rock and Del Valle. For more information, other ways to volunteer and to sign up to volunteer visit www.communitytaxcenters.org or e-mail Jackie.Blair@foundcom.org
