SAVE THE DATE: 2nd Annual MECA Career Expo
REMINDER!! The Multi-Ethnic Chamber Alliance (MECA) is proud to present the 2nd Annual Multicultural Career Expo sponsored by the City of Austin. The Career Expo is intended to open up opportunities for minority job seekers and facilitate various career-training sessions for Austin area residents. The Expo will take place Tuesday, November 18th, at the Wyndham Garden Hotel, 3401 S. IH-35. The opening events will begin at 10 am. followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony with Austin City Manager, Marc Ott and conclude with a networking reception from 4:00 pm until 6:30 pm.
Over 50 Austin area companies are expected to participate as vendors at the all day expo. This power packed Career Expo will consist of three training sessions that focus on the areas of Resume Development, Job-Hunting Techniques, and Interviewing Skills. In addition to the training seminars, attendees will have the opportunity to have one-on-one interaction with company representatives during the closing networking reception.
We are currently seeking volunteers to assist in passing out materials, registration and end-of-ceremony help. If anyone wishes to volunteer their time, please contact Aarin Brewer at (512) 459-1181 ext. 202 or abrewer@capcitychamber.org.

Successful Mixer Benefits Top Teens of America
Black professionals within the City of Austin gathered Thursday, November 13th for a professional networking mixer to benefit the Top Teens of America Foundation. The event was held at the Carver African American Museum. Generous monetary donations as well as band-aid supplies were given in support of the foundation. Various speakers of the evening included councilwoman Sheryl Cole, NAACP Austin President Nelson Linder, Brian Marshall of Dell and Dr. Chiquita W. Eugene of the CCAACC. The evening concluded with an appreciation award presentation of a certificate and $25 gift card to Mr. Linder and Mrs. Cole.
Organizations such as the National Association of Black Accountants, Austin Black Lawyers Association, Blacks in Government as well as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity were also in attendance. Roger Davis of the NABA Austin Cen-tex Chapter, who helped sponsor the mixer, was grateful for the community’s participation.
“We are very thankful for everyone that came out to show their support. We are hopeful that everyone will become a member of every great organization that was there and follow through on challenges that Mr. Linder presented to us as a community.We don’t expect everyone to be a member of EVERY organization, but we hope for them to at least pick one.” said Mr. Davis.

Volunteer to Impact 20,000 Families
At the Community Tax Centers, volunteers help low-income families claim millions of dollars in tax refunds and credits. By providing free income tax preparation services, IRS certified volunteers give working families a chance to build a financial future. For the 2009 tax season, they need over 500 volunteers to reach their goal of completing 20,000 tax returns and putting $26 million back into the pockets of those who need it most. What is takes to volunteer:
- Complete 8 hours of New Volunteer Training
- A commitment of just 3hrs/wk, or a total of 36 hours, between January and April
- CPE credits are offered for CPA’s that receive their IRS certification and volunteer the 36 hours requested
- A desire to give back to YOUR community
There are 10 conveniently located tax centers throughout Austin, including one in Round Rock and Del Valle.
