Volunteer to Impact 20,000 Families

At the Community Tax Centers, volunteers help low-income families claim millions of dollars in tax refunds and credits. By providing free income tax preparation services, IRS certified volunteers give working families a chance to build a financial future.
For the 2009 tax season, they need over 500 volunteers to reach their goal of completing 20,000 tax returns and putting $26 million back into the pockets of those who need it most. What is takes to volunteer:
  • Complete 8 hours of New Volunteer Training
  • A commitment of just 3hrs/wk, or a total of 36 hours, between January and April
  • CPE credits are offered for CPA’s that receive their IRS certification and volunteer the 36 hours requested
  • A desire to give back to YOUR community
There are 10 conveniently located tax centers throughout Austin, including one in Round Rock and Del Valle. For more information, other ways to volunteer and to sign up to volunteer visit www.communitytaxcenters.org or e-mail Jackie.Blair@foundcom.org

Small Business Owners To Get Tips From Experienced Contractors

The City of Austin Small and Minority Business Resources Department invites contractors and small business owners to a Nov. 12 workshop to get advice from prime contractors who have successfully received City contracts. The workshop will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Waller Creek Bldg., 625 E. 10th St., Room 104.
This Meet-the-Prime workshop will feature successful prime contractors from the engineering, construction, and professional services industries” said Stephen Elkins, SMBR Director.  “The prime contractors will offer guidance to small businesses on everything from how to market your business to a prime contractor to how to grow from a subcontractor into a prime contractor.”
SMBR assists small minority-owned and women-owned businesses as they pursue contracting opportunities with the City of Austin.  In addition, SMBR encourages MBE/WBEs to participate in City contracts and oversees the City’s MBE/WBE & DBE contracting goals in the areas of construction, professional services, commodities, and non-professional services.
