The Capital City Chamber is buzzing with excitement for our Black Expo taking place on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Monarch Event Center. On Thursday, September 27^th over 50 business professionals joined the Chamber at Ms.B’s for our Black Expo Launch Event. This event was designed to network with other area professionals and to take advantage of a one night only vendor special!
 
If you missed your opportunity to register as a vendor at the Black Expo Launch Event it isn’t too late. You can still register as a vendor by visiting the official Black Expo website at www.austinblackexpo.com. The cost to register as a vendor is only $125 for a business and $75 for a nonprofit or government agency.
 
We are also still accepting applications for step teams and the Soulful Taste of Austin Cook-off. The Chamber is pleased to announce that our Chamber President and CEO Dr. Chiquita Eugene will be traveling with the City of Austin and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce on an Inter-City visit to Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. This trip serves as a “Learning Lesson” to understand what communities similar to Austin are doing and how our City can improve.

PeopleFund Austin invites you to join them on Saturday October 11^th for their most interactive and inclusive Summit yet.  East Austin has changed dramatically from when they first began the conference in 2003.  This year PeopleFund invites everyone to come together to discuss how we can all move forward through the maze of economic changes, new developments and growing populations.
 
This year’s program includes a local economic snapshot seen through the lens of regional trends as well as a first ever interactive survey on community development.  The diverse viewpoints and interactive panel discussions, chosen to address both immediate and future needs and concerns, spur innovative ideas for addressing challenges.  PeopleFund hopes to bridge divides and strengthen ties in our collective movement toward a healthy and prosperous region.

The City of Austin’s Small & Minority Business Resources Department (SMBR) is hosting a Certification 101 Workshop on Wednesday, October 8^th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm in Room 104 of the Waller Creek Building located at 625 East 10^th Street.
 
Certification 101 gives businesses a chance to find out about the opportunities available for small minority-owned or women-owned business enterprises (MBE/WBEs) with the City of Austin. SMBR also certifies vendors as Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBEs) so that they can participate in federal procurement opportunities dealing with highways and transportation.

The Central Texas Advisory Board, a member council of the Texas Diversity Council, will host their “4^th Annual Best Practices & DiversityFIRST^TM Awards Luncheon” on Wednesday, October 29, 2008, featuring a diverse group of presenters and participants with diverse ethnicities, backgrounds and experiences.  This year’s event will be held at the MCC Building, 3925 West Braker Lane, Austin, TX 78759.  
 
The best practices sessions will be facilitated by Katrina Villarreal, Senior Vice President, Lee Hecht Harrison and Tiffany Hildreth, Partner, Strasburger & Price, LLP. The topics to be presented include “Generational Workforce & Diversity” and “Employment Best Practices” respectively.   Both sessions are free to the public. These concurrent sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at  11:00 a.m. 
 
  The keynote speaker for the luncheon will be former three-term Governor, John G.
