FEMA to open local assistance center; shelters no longer admitting evacuees
More than 10 days after Hurricane Ike sheltering operations began, facilities within the Capital Area Shelter Hub Plan stopped taking in new occupants Sunday.
Sheltering operations are winding down as officials work to place evacuees in hotels or transport them back home as utility and other services are restored in their home counties.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives will open a Disaster Recovery Center at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the Givens Recreation Center, 3811 E, 12th St. This center is for those who have not been at shelters as well as those from the shelters who need additional help. Evacuees may also call 2-1-1 or 3-1-1 to find out how to receive assistance.
Officials still are working with those within the two remaining general population shelters to ensure they are connected with services. A medical special needs facility also continues in operation.
The Austin Convention Center, one of two general population shelters, will close Sept. 25.
